The Wild Robot has had a rare surge at the box office more than a month into its theatrical run. The new DreamWorks movie, adapted from the children's book of the same name by Peter Brown, follows the robot Roz (Lupita Nyong'o) being stranded on a desert island and becoming the surrogate mother for an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor). The Wild Robot release kicked off in late September with a middling opening weekend of $35.7 million, but slowly and steadily became a sleeper hit, rising past $200 million worldwide.
Per Deadline, The Wild Robot has experienced an incredibly rare week 6 surge at the box office. Instead of a week-on-week drop, the movie actually rose 11% from its week 5 total, with Sunday morning's projections showing it earning a 3-day total of $7.55 million at the domestic box office, landing it at No. 2 on the chart and bringing its cumulative domestic haul to $121.4 million. It is only the 13th movie to pass the $120 million domestic milestone in 2024 and the fourth animated movie, behind Kung Fu Panda 4, Despicable Me 4, and Inside Out 2.
What This Means For The Wild Robot
Many Factors Have Influenced Its Success
There are many factors unrelated to The Wild Robot that could be responsible for this surge at the box office. This includes the Terrifier 3 release and the fact that underage viewers have reportedly been buying tickets for the DreamWorks movie in order to sneak in to see the unrated, gory slasher film. Additionally, the sole major new release, Here, has severely underperformed, landing at No. 5 in its opening weekend and thus preventing the previous weekend's holdover hits from experiencing much competition.
Here reunites director Robert Zemeckis with Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth and stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, but it only debuted with $5 million against its $45 million budget.
However, the animated movie also stands strong on its own merits. In addition to being a frontrunner for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, it has been well-received by both critics and audiences. The Wild Robot reviews have earned it matching 98% scores from both groups on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, in robust enough numbers that the platform has deemed it both Certified Fresh and Verified hot.
