Jason Statham’s new action movie will roll into theaters everywhere this weekend, but critics around the world have already come to a decision about the film’s quality. The embargo for Shelter lifted this afternoon, and enough reviews have come in to give the film a respectable 73% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This comes from 26 reviews at the time of writing, so it is subject to change, but it’s a large enough sample size to get Statham fans excited. The film won’t earn a score on the audience-driven Popcornmeter until Friday or Saturday, when enough fans have seen it.
For comparison, this current 73% score from Shelter is much higher than the Rotten 43% that A Working Man holds on Rotten Tomatoes. A Working Man’s score comes from over 160 reviews, though, so Shelter could also find itself in a downward spiral as more reviews come in. Shelter’s current Rotten Tomatoes score is even higher than that of The Beekeeper, which came to rest at 71%. A Working Man and The Beekeeper earned Verified Hot scores of 87% and 92% on the Popcornmeter, respectively, so Shelter has a high bar to clear if it’s going to also surpass its predecessors by audience standards.
Shelter follows a reclusive man (Statham) living on a remote coastal island. When he chooses to rescue a young girl (Bodhie Rae Breathnach), this draws both of them into danger. He’s then forced out of isolation to confront his turbulent past while protecting her. In addition to Statham and Breathnach, Shelter also stars Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) and Bill Nighy (Living). Ward Perry wrote the script for the film, which Ric Roman Waugh directed.
Jason Statham Has One More Movie Coming This Year
Several months after Shelter has left theaters, Statham will star in Mutiny, another action thriller that co-stars Peaky Blinders veteran Annabelle Wallis. The film follows Cole Reed, a man who is framed for the murder of his boss, leaving him on the run and in the middle of an international conspiracy. Mutiny will be released in theaters on August 21, and it was directed by Jean-François Richet (Plane). Mutiny will be Statham’s final movie of 2026, but he’ll return to theaters early in 2027 with The Beekeeper 2, the sequel to his 2024 action thriller. The film has been dated for January 15, 2027.
