The truth about Lena Dunham's shockingly vulgar Taylor Swift wedding speech… it's just so revealing: CAROLINE BULLOCK

It felt like day 92 of the unending saga that has become the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce nuptials, and after a Dior dress, destination decoys and deftly timed disclosures, what could be better than a crude speech from Lena Dunham?

That's what the couple's families and friends were treated to during their rehearsal dinner on Thursday inside Madison Square Garden's Infosys Theater in New York City, according to an insider.

As guests chowed down on posh Italian fare, 40-year-old actress and writer Dunham attempted to deliver her own gut-buster with this cringey punchline: 'American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn,' Dunham quipped in a reference to NFL champion Kelce's profession.

Guess you had to be there.

Unsurprisingly, the 'joke' is said to have received a mixed reception from attendees, which included an array of NFL players and other pro-sports stars. Yet it somehow easily impressed Bridezilla Swift - a bridesmaid at Dunham's own 2021 wedding - who declared her friend 'a genius' afterwards. High praise indeed from the bard behind Shake It Off.

The truth is, letting rent-a-mouth Dunham run wild with smutty gags simply reflects the questionable judgment that has propelled the entire Taylor/Travis trashfest. How else to describe a ceremony decked out in tasteless peach fabric and officiated by Adam Sandler?

As a reminder, the overrated and often under-dressed Dunham has been a darling of liberal media since she created and starred in the unfathomably acclaimed HBO series Girls back in 2012.

This was the show that masqueraded as a 'raw and unfiltered' look at young womanhood – but in reality, was an indulgent excuse for the chubby star to disrobe under the worthy banner of body positivity.

And controversies followed, including her ill-judged comparison between sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby and the Holocaust. When promoting the 2015 interview on Instagram, she addressed her comments, writing that she was 'aware' that the analogy 'wasn't my best.'

Then, there were her flippant remarks about abortion.

'Now I can say that I still haven't had an abortion, but I wish I had,' trilled Dunham on her podcast, Women of the Hour a decade ago, as if discussing a bucket-list milestone she simply had to tick off.

She later apologized on Instagram, writing, 'My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don't choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means...I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated.'

Predictably however, when not causing offense, Dunham knows how to pile on the gush to court favor with those who really matter.

'It's a crazy thing, because she's one of my best friends in the world but she's also my favorite music,' she twittered recently to People Magazine about her friendship with Swift, 36.

What are the chances.

Not that Dunham was the only elephant in the room at the rumored $50 million wedding of the decade. 

Banished bestie Blake Lively was missing – an absence that highlights the fickle churn of Taylor's girl squad. Once regularly draped all over each other on a night out, the friendship imploded after Swift was drawn into Lively's legal saga with former It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni.

Meanwhile, those that made the cut were treated to a slew of events, including a Friday evening marquee soiree described as 'Alice in Wonderland meets The Wizard of Oz,' a natural choice for a bride pushing 40 who is said to have wafted down the aisle to her own music.

Ultimately the couple's choice to turn one of America's most high-profile and iconic venues into an A-list fortress and revel in their elite fairy dust spoke volumes.

Like those other wallflowers Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez – who conveniently shut down Venice for their own wedding last June – Swift's affair featured the same vulgar display of uber wealth, excess, power and narcissism.

'JUST&T MARRIED,' announced a giant billboard outside the Garden, drip-feeding tidbits of the fete to the unwashed New Yorkers sweltering in the record heat just outside. All was being filmed anyway, no doubt: ready to be packaged and priced at a premium for fans to enjoy at a later date.

Seemingly wary of the unflattering optics, the couple made a total of $26 million worth of donation to various charities including food banks and children's hospitals. It's a welcome gesture, but one that still doesn't entirely deflect from the vulgarity and inconvenience they caused.

While the festivities may have whipped Swifties into fever pitch as they hung about for even a glimpse of deliveries and equipment, many others were probably not feeling the love.

What about the small businesses that had to close in midtown Manhattan, local residents with lives thrown into disarray because of street closures or an already strained NYPD assigning more than 100 officers to keep it all in check? I sure hope that taxpayers were not left to pick up the check for extra security.

Meanwhile, even ostensibly heartwarming mementos given to guests, such as the custom-made handkerchief featuring the couple's intertwined Ts logo, had a sting in the tail.

Embroidered onto it was the opening lyric from Swift's 2014 hit Blank Space: 'So it's gonna be forever...'

Those familiar with her work will be aware that the song's next line is, 'Or it's going to go down in flames.'

After all this spectacle of hype and consumption, it would be a tragedy if this all-American dream didn't go the distance. That said, this is a woman who likes to leave her options open and is never afraid to shed her inner circle when they no longer serve her interests. Just ask Blake.
