Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Testaments season 1, episode 10!The Testaments creator Bruce Miller already knows how June and Agnes' stories are going to end.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, though, Miller confirmed that the endgame of The Testaments will see June and Agnes, eventually, reunite once more. The showrunner said this would take "three or four" seasons in total, depending on a variety of factors. However, when it comes to giving the pair a proper reunion, Miller is intent on making good on it, given just how much it's been part of both shows since the very beginning of The Handmaid's Tale.
Check out what Miller had to say below:
I do have a tidbit to tell you, which is that I am planning to get June and Hannah/Agnes together by the end.
So, if you think about that, I have a three or four season sense. But I know that if things go well and we have story to tell, I certainly can move that [reunion] forward. You never want to tread water, but in Gilead, there’s so much going on and it’s so complicated — and these actors are so good — that it really does not feel like the difference between three and four seasons would be that difficult for us to put our heads around. As long as Disney and Hulu and MGM and Amazon and everybody is willing to make the show, I’m thrilled. It’s exactly what I want to be doing. It’s beautiful, it’s meaningful.
The reunion between June and her daughter has been a long time coming, with June's fight resting solely on the notion that she can get her back. The Handmaid's Tale season 6 ended with June and the other Handmaids liberating Boston, Massachusetts, ending with her deciding to record the history of her time in Gilead so her story could inspire others. While June is a hero to the viewer, the Plums in Agnes' school have been taught she's a terrorist. This dichotomy will be important for the series going forward.
Reuniting June and Agnes appears to be an inevitable endgame for the series. The last time the two interacted directly with each other was during The Handmaid's Tale season 4, when Agnes was trapped in a glass cage and tormented as punishment for June's escape attempt. The Testaments has made it clear that, despite the two being together at various points in the original show, Agnes doesn't fully remember her birth mother, making the revelation an important part of how the sequel series will proceed.
Now that her daughter knows the truth of her parentage, The Testaments season 2 can more readily focus on bringing the pair together, while still juggling the other elements of the story. Daisy, as June's spy, is hoping to gather a larger resistance of girls against Gilead, while Aunt Lydia sees Agnes as a bright young woman who can help them enact real change in the nation. The series' approach will, inevitably, lead to June and Agnes reuniting, but the road there is still long and winding.
Luckily, it appears Miller has a distinct vision for how The Testaments is going to play out, pulling from the pages of Margaret Atwood's original novel while pursuing a larger story that will pay off many story beats originally set up in The Handmaid's Tale. This will make for a strong reunion once the pair are finally together, even if the circumstances will take some time to properly set up.
