‘The Tattooist Of Auschwitz’ Star Jonah Hauer-King Says Documentary ‘The Tattooist’s Son’ Is About “Finding Humanity In This History”

The Tattooist of Auschwitz star Jonah Hauer-King has said the upcoming documentary in which Gary Sokolov retraces the journey of his parents is “inspiring and surprising and gives me some hope for humanity.”

Stephen Bennett-directed doc The Tattooist’s Son: Journey to Auschwitz sees Sokolov walk in the footseps of his parents Lali and Gita. They were taken from their respective homes to the Auschwitz concentration camp where they met and fell in love. Their story was immortalized in the Heather Morris novel The Tattooist Of Auschwitz and the eponymous series was made by Claire Mundell’s Synchronicity, which also produced the documentary.

Hauer-King plays the younger Lali in the drama series and he spends time with Gary in The Tattooist’s Son: Journey to Auschwitz doc. His co-star Anna Próchniak also appears.

One poignant scene shows Hauer-King taking Gary’s hand, comforting him as he visits places from his parents’ past and processes what happened to them.

“The thing that surprised me the most was this [idea] of finding humanity and compassion in this history,” Hauer-King said at a London screening of The Tattooist’s Son: Journey to Auschwitz, which is released on January 27, coinciding with Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

He added: “Starting with Lali and Gita and the fact that they were able to have the space in their hearts and in their minds to fall in love in that place is pretty extraordinary to me, and the random acts of kindness…. no-one should be expected to be a hero in that environment, and yet there were so many who did so much for others and thought so selflessly.”

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz was on Sky in the UK and its Comcast-owned stablemate Peacock in the U.S., generating strong viewing figures on both sides of the pond.

The Tattooist’s Son: Journey to Auschwitz will be on Sky History in the UK and Stan in Australia. Comcast’s NBCUniversal is across sales. There is not a U.S. outlet for the doc at time of writing.
