The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is goomba-stomping the competition at the box office.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, The Super Mario Galaxy movie is projected to end its debut weekend with a 5-day gross of $372.5 million at the global box office. This total comprises a 5-day Easter weekend gross of $190 million at the domestic box office and an additional $182.5 million from international markets.

With its huge $372.5 million haul, 2026's Super Mario Galaxy Movie has instantly launched itself onto the Top 5 chart of the highest-grossing movies of the year worldwide, landing at No. 3 behind Project Hail Mary ($400 million) and the Chinese blockbuster Pegasus 3 ($609.1 million).

While Galaxy is already a smash hit at the domestic box office, its 3-day total of $130 million and 5-day total of $190 million have seen it trailing somewhat behind Super Mario Bros.' $146.4 million and $204.6 million. However, the new movie's $372.5 global debut is nearly equal to the original's $375 million thanks to a huge boost in international viewership. Galaxy's $182.4 million outstrips the 2023 movie's $171 million, putting the two movies on a more or less even playing field.

It remains to be seen if The Super Mario Galaxy Movie shows stronger audience retention internationally, as well. However, if it does, it is entirely possible that it could outgross the original movie at the worldwide box office by the end of its run. This would be a major achievement, considering the fact that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the sixth highest-grossing animated movie of all time. It grossed $1.361 billion worldwide, becoming only the 11th animated movie to ever pass the billion-dollar milestone.

Since the debut of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2, and Moana 2 have also passed the billion-dollar milestone.

Regardless of its performance compared to the original movie, the new installment has already set itself on track to overcome its negative critical reception to become a smash hit. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reviews gave it a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes (even lower than the 2023 movie's already Rotten 59%), it has earned a Verified Hot 89% score from audiences that has clearly translated to a superb commercial performance.

In fact, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may already have turned a profit. The movie reportedly cost $110 million to make, which likely places its estimated break-even point at $275 million. That is a benchmark that the movie has already exceeded by a whopping $97.5 million.

If its run ended now, it would presumably already be in the black. However, there is a lot of runway ahead of it, as the majority of the impending weekends in April lack major new releases with the same level of blockbuster potential. The next release that seems like a strong competitor for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the music biopic Michael, which doesn't debut until the end of the month, on April 24. As far as direct competition from a family movie goes, it has an additional four weekends before The Mandalorian and Grogu debuts on May 22.
