The Suits Revival I've Wanted For Six Years Now Looks Completely Impossible

3 hours ago 5

Gabriel Macht's comments about his upcoming return as Harvey Specter convince me that the Suits revival that I've wanted for 6 years is now dead in the water. In 2011, at the height of USA Network's original series, Aaron Korsh's legal drama amassed a dedicated fan base that followed all through 9 seasons of changes at Pearson, Hardman. It wasn't until 2023 that Suits found a bigger audience, as it became a streaming darling both for Netflix and Peacock. Soon, conversations about revisiting the franchise started, but while Korsh was initially hesitant, NBC eventually convinced him to expand the franchise.

I was one of Suits' original viewers during its time on USA Network. The legal drama and Jeff Eastin's White Collar were my comfort shows. Because of this, I'm also one of the first few people on Screen Rant who covered the show. Despite my love for Suits, even I was surprised when it started charting in 2023. Regardless if you're a relatively new fan or not, however, it's safe to say that its backbone was its ensemble. So while Suits: LA is bringing back the franchise, it isn't the revival that I want to see.

Admittedly, the Suits' ending wasn't as strong when it ended, but the legal drama's first few seasons were definitely addicting. It stayed true to its tagline of "Two Lawyers, One Degree," with Mike Ross and Harvey's chemistry totally palpable. Beyond that, every single core player in the story was interesting and unique. I miss that version of Suits, and while I understand that it will never be replicated, Harvey's return in Suits: LA for a multi-episode arc gave me hope that there's a future where the original crew could get together on the small screen. Sadly, my hopes are dashed after Macht's comments:

I'm just doing it for the fans. I'm not doing it for me. I've done it 134 times. I'm not doing it for me. I had very little interest in coming back to work as an actor right now because I spent so much time [doing it] and this was my time to really raise my kids and to do this creative stuff like Bear Fight.

... [if there was] a way to do this where it made sense for my family, it made sense for the timing and if there was a way that I could sort of pass the baton to Stephen [Amell] and the cast in L.A. If I [could have] anything to do with helping support the show and getting it off [the ground], it’s almost like [giving] a blessing.

Harvey's return in Suits: LA is to establish the spinoff's connection with the original, as New York's Best Closer helps his old friend navigate a tricky situation. Unless something has changed, it's safe to say that he remains based in Seattle, with Donna, Mike, and Rachel, running a smaller clinic. This makes it easy for Harvey to fly to California. While he would likely drop updates about how life has been for them, seeing the couples back on the screen would be the best option.

Macht's Stance Makes A Proper Suits Sequel Impossible

There's No Suits Revival Without Harvey

While I will be checking out Suits: LA when it finally premieres, I believe Korsh would understand that I, alongside many other fans, would be more interested in a proper Suits sequel series. Calling it season 10 may not be accurate, since it won't be boxed in the four walls of Pearson, Hardman's New York office, a follow-up show with Mike and Harvey working together in Seattle would be the best-case scenario for people who loved Suits because of its original ensemble. Meghan Markle's retirement from acting ruled out Rachel's appearance, but a reunion was still on the table.

Suits: LA Is Already Lying About Harvey Specter's Replacement Before The Spinoff Even Premieres

NBC has released the first trailer for Suits LA, and the spinoff is already lying about Harvey Specter's replacement: Stephen Amell's Ted Black.

However, a Suits sequel without Harvey Specter would arguably be useless. I still believe that he shared the main protagonist lead with Mike, but to not have them both wouldn't be the revival that many have been aspiring for. The latter seasons of Suits missed the pair's easy-going dynamic as they go after a common foe, and we're hoping to see that again in a follow-up show, even in a limited series capacity. But if Macht is closing the door on acting, his decision effectively doubles as closing the door on an official Suits return.

Why A Proper Suits Revival Is Still Needed Despite Suits: LA

Suits' Original Characters Still Need A Reunion

Since Suits: LA comes from the same mind that birthed the original show, I am optimistic about it. Granted that the Gina Torres-led Pearson ended up being canceled by NBC after just 1 season, it's worth noting that the spinoff had a different creative team behind it. Regardless of how Suits: LA performs, however, a Suits reunion with the majority of its original character is still needed.

Hopefully, once the writer/producer comes up with a good Suits sequel narrative, Macht will be willing to reconsider his current stance on acting.

Fans who discovered the legal drama via streaming fell in love with that ensemble, and old-timers like myself share the sentiment. Korsh doesn't even have to come up with a legal procedural, a limited series run seeing Harvey and Mike in Seattle would be enough to properly bring their story full circle. Hopefully, once the writer/producer comes up with a good Suits sequel narrative, Macht will be willing to reconsider his current stance on acting.
