Scubs' 2026 revival is off to a great start, officially wiping out the existence of the forever-loathed season 9. This medical sitcom kicked off in 2001 and concluded with what was largely agreed to be an emotional and satisfying ending with season 8 in 2009. However, in a frustrating twist that continues to grate on fans' nerves, Scrubs returned for another season later that same year. That satisfying ending was undone just so that a handful of the original cast could return to melt into the background of a dramatized medical school.
This infamously horrible final season of Scrubs made us all naturally hesitant to celebrate the promised revival. News arrived in 2025 that such a project was on the way, and the subsequent confirmation that Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Judy Reyes, Sarah Chalke, and John C. McGinley would all take part was certainly encouraging. Of course, there was no way to know whether the Scrubs revival would be a repeat of season 9 until it finally premiered on February 25, 2026.
This new season of Scrubs is certainly off to a great start. The show's general tone is nostalgically similar to the original, and these older versions of the characters feel like completely organic continuations of their season 8 counterparts. Even better, the Scrubs revival brings everyone back to the Sacred Heart Hospital we know and love, which speaks volumes about the show's opinion of season 9.
Sacred Heart Hospital Was Demolished In Scrubs Season 9
The whole point of the Scrubs revival's first episode is that Sacred Heart Hospital hasn't changed a bit, and that's a pretty massive deal since Scrubs season 9 tore the whole place down. This was one of the first faux pas of the divisive season. Sacred Heart was basically a living, breathing character. The revelation in season 9 that this key location was torn down and replaced with a modern, painfully unfamiliar medical school wasn't just uncomfortable. It felt like a slap to the face.
In just a few short moments, the new Scrubs completely wiped all that away. Sacred Heart was never torn down, and JD didn't become a University professor. Instead, we can officially imagine that this hospital's dysfunctional heart kept on pumping between that true ending in season 8 and the start of Scrubs' return in 2026.
The Scrubs Revival's Restoration Of Sacred Heart Symbolically Erases That Messy History
There are several ways that the Scrubs revival could have approached season 9. There's no question that the familiar setting of Sacred Heart was an absolute must for the new show, just as it was imperative that all the major cast return. However, for the sake of continuity, these new episodes could have comically revealed that Sacred Heart was rebuilt. It would have worked fine, but the route Scrubs took was far superior.
By establishing that Sacred Heart continues to stand just as it did before, Scrubs is simply removing season 9 from the mix altogether. It's like these episodes never existed. The show is essentially apologizing to fans— "I know that wasn't what you wanted, so let's forget it ever happened and just start fresh." With all that out of the way, Scrubs is all set up to carry on the story in meaningful ways. It's a clean slate (or chart, if you will).
