A new episode of The Pitt is set to arrive on HBO Max tonight, and leading star Noah Wyle is breaking down one of the most touching moments from the previous installment. One scene in The Pitt, Season 2, Episode 3, saw Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) share a blessing with two other fathers, including Dr. Donahue (Brandon Mendez Homer). Langdon is a father himself, albeit his kids are a bit older, but this scene provided him a chance to pay some fatherly wisdom forward. Wyle, who also wrote Episode 3, recently sat down for an interview with TV Line to explain this scene in its entirety.
When asked why he chose to have Langdon give a blessing from John O’Donohue, he first spoke about his history with the Irish poet and author, “John O’Donohue is an author that I got turned on to several years ago by David Crosby’s widow, Jan — a good friend who was looking for some cones of wisdom to help her through a difficult time.” Continuing, Wyle said, “His ‘Book of Blessings’ I found to be just absolutely beautiful. Every one, on every subject, had some really lovely phrasing and some really lovely wisdom. So he’s just been in my back pocket.”
When asked how he made this connection from his back pocket to the script for Episode 3, Wyle explained that three fathers in a room with a kid who won’t sit still isn’t something you see every day. You can find his full quote below, where he also talks about how Langdon’s recovery inspired his decision to cite this blessing:
“When it came to writing this scene… it’s three fathers in a room with a kid that won’t sit still — and that’s a rare thing. Donahue is a new father… Langdon’s got older kids. And fatherhood doesn’t come with a manual, so you’ve got three guys talking about their experiences of being fathers.”
“Langdon’s most recent reference point is this prayer that he’s been clinging to. It gives him some sense of stability, some sense of purpose, and some clarity about what’s important in his life. So, it seemed perfectly appropriate that he would offer something into the conversation that’s more in keeping with his recovery program.”
Will ‘The Pitt’ Get a New Season?
There will be another season of The Pitt. HBO confirmed that the hit medical drama had been renewed for a third season mere days before the Season 2 premiere. There has been no announcement about when Season 3 will begin production or when it will be released, but if it sticks to the same window as the first two seasons, it will air early next year. The Pitt Season 2 will continue to release new episodes until the finale on April 16.
