For nearly three decades, One Piece has built one of the most expansive worlds in anime history, yet fans have long hoped to see its supporting characters receive deeper, more focused stories. Now, after 27 years since Eiichiro Oda’s pirate epic first launched in 1997, that wish is finally becoming reality in a surprising new way.
The franchise is already riding a massive wave in 2026, with a returning anime, a live-action second season on Netflix, and the long-awaited Final Saga continuing. But the announcement of One Piece: Heroines, a spin-off centered on the series’ female cast, by One Piece's Official YouTube account marks a major milestone that fans have been anticipating for years.
One Piece Puts a Long-Awaited Spotlight on Nami and the Heroines
One Piece: Heroines is based on the light novel written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Sayaka Suwa, which compiles original stories focusing on the women of the series. These stories were never part of the main manga, making this adaptation a rare chance to explore fresh material within Oda’s universe.
The anime adaptation will debut in Japan on July 5, 2026, but with a notable twist, because it will be a single-episode special. Rather than adapting the entire novel, the project focuses specifically on “Episode: Nami,” placing the Straw Hat crew’s navigator at the center of a self-contained narrative.
While some fans may be disappointed that characters like Nico Robin and others won’t receive full episodes this time, the decision allows the production team to deliver a tightly crafted story with high production quality. The special is directed by Haruka Kamatami at Toei Animation, with Takashi Kojima handling character designs and Momoka Toyoda overseeing the script.
Returning voice actors bring authenticity to the project, with Nami and Robin’s original performers reprising their roles. Meanwhile, new characters Miucha and Lubun will be voiced by Maaya Sakamoto and Takehito Koyasu, respectively, who are two veterans known for elevating any project they join.
One Piece: Heroines Expands the One Piece World
The story of “Episode: Nami” offers a smaller-scale, character-driven narrative compared to the grand adventures fans are used to. After purchasing a pair of shoes that end up hurting her feet, Nami returns to the shop to complain, only to be drawn into an unexpected collaboration.
There, she meets a designer who offers to create custom shoes, but only if Nami agrees to model for him. The shoes are crafted by an artisan named Miucha, setting the stage for a unique encounter that blends fashion, personality, and subtle character development. It’s a grounded premise, but one that gives Nami a fresh kind of spotlight rarely seen in the main series.

This spin-off also arrives at a huge time for the franchise. The main anime is launching the Elbaph Arc on April 5, 2026, continuing the Final Saga and finally taking Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats to the legendary land of giants, which is a destination teased for decades in the manga.
Together, these projects highlight how One Piece continues to evolve even after nearly 30 years. While the core story charges toward its ultimate conclusion, One Piece: Heroines proves there’s still room to explore new perspectives, smaller stories, and beloved characters in meaningful ways.
