There is a war raging across the world of DC superheroes and supervillains, all fighting to be the company's next god-level star. But with the publisher confirming Superman is about to go missing, a former supervillain is taking the chance to land a major promotion. It's still hard to believe, but it's nevertheless official: there is a new Superman in Metropolis.
Superboy Prime is Officially Taking Over As DC's Main Superman
Beginning in March, The Evil Doppelganger Replaces The Man of Steel
Once known for being the most twisted, disturbed, misguided, and tragically homicidal of all Superman variants, the being known as 'Superboy Prime' has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past year. But as Darkseid's master plan has driven the DC Universe from bad to worse, Superboy Prime has returned to heroic status in fighting the forces of evil. A welcome change, and one which will now grant him the ability (if not 'permission') to take up the part of the real, main, Metropolis-bound Superman.
DC had previously announced the launch of "The Reign of The Superboys," a storyline putting the spotlight on all variations of the character active in the current DC line, with Superman going missing in 2026 (along with some surprise additions). But with the newly revealed plot synopsis for Superman #37 coming in April, it's confirmed Prime is getting more than "a real shot" at claiming the role of the main Superman. He's getting his own version of Clark Kent's life:
Superboy Prime gets a new real-life job with a new secret identity while he protects Metropolis from dangerous threats! But there is a whole DC Comics universe out there for him to explore, and the fanboy in him wants to see it all... Too bad there are heroes who don't trust him and think he should be locked up!
The story will put Superboy Prime center stage in DC's flagship Superman comic series from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Dan Mora. And if the first cover art is any indication, comic fans may finally get to see their dream come true, watching as Superboy Prime embraces heroism working the shelves of a comic shop.
At What Point Can We Officially Re-Title Him 'Superman Prime'?
The New Suit And New Morality Are Quickly Redeeming A Murderer
The main cover art for the issue confirms that not everyone is eager to accept Superboy Prime's return to the light, with several major heroes aligned against him (for the many atrocities he committed during Infinite Crisis, Blackest Night, Death Metal, and more). But as this tortured soul finds better role models, a new identity, and a simpler Superman suit, all while aging from an adolescent into a man, we have to ask... is this the birth of the new Superman Prime?
There is no question he'll have Red Hood on his side, but fans will get to see this story play out for themselves when Prime moves into Metropolis in Superman #36 this March, from DC Comics.
