While season 5 is now confirmed to be on the way, Netflix may continue expanding The Lincoln Lawyer property beyond Mickey Haller's main story.
Through the book universe established by author Michael Connelly, two of TV's most popular crime series lead characters, detective Harry Bosch and defense attorney Mickey Haller, are technically connected as half-brothers. However, due to the Bosch character being picked up by Amazon and the rights to Mickey Haller being held by Netflix, neither is able to exist within the other's TV universe.
Still, the Michael Connelly-created characters are at the center of two key properties on rival streaming platforms. After Bosch: Legacy's ending in 2025, Harry Bosch's story has continued with Prime Video's spinoff Ballard and, now, the upcoming Bosch: Start of Watch prequel series on MGM+. Meanwhile, The Lincoln Lawyer has yet to expand with any spinoffs at Netflix despite its continued popularity.
Before The Lincoln Lawyer season 4's release on Netflix on February 5, co-showrunner Ted Humphrey discussed in an interview with ScreenRant's Jordan Williams whether any potential spinoffs are on the table. According to Humphrey, they "absolutely have a wider universe for these characters in mind." Though Humphrey didn't reveal any details, he shared that ideas for potential The Lincoln Lawyer spinoffs have touched on Mickey's backstory, family, and major characters within his tight circle:
Jordan Williams: "These aren't connected except for in the Michael Connelly book universe, but there has been confirmation of a Bosch prequel series, and I was curious about if that's something you guys have ever considered tapping into with The Lincoln Lawyer lore. I've personally always wondered what it would be like to see Legal Siegel and Mickey's father young."
Ted Humphrey: "From your lips to Ted Sarandos' ears. Listen, that's fascinating and I think could be very interesting. I will say that we absolutely have a wider universe for these characters in mind.
Obviously, at the end of the day, the audience is who determines that, just like the audience is who determines the next season and how many seasons there are, if there's a next season or whatever it is. So we definitely want to expand the world of Mickey's personal life, his family, who this guy is and where he finds himself, and who are the people that he calls family. Let's put it that way. So we're looking at all those things."
Considering The Lincoln Lawyer just nabbed an early season 5 renewal, it looks like Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos is putting more faith into the future of the hit legal series even before its latest outing's performance is revealed. However, Humphrey is still hoping that Sarandos will take that trust in the property further by potentially allowing him and co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez to expand on other stories and timelines in The Lincoln Lawyer world.
The Lincoln Lawyer season 1 picks up with Mickey Haller down on his luck but already renowned as a skilled, yet unconventional, defense attorney in Los Angeles. There's plenty of lore and rich history to Mickey's life, career, and those he brings in as found family that has largely only had the opportunity to be explored through brief flashbacks or references – much of which could provide the basis for its own spinoff or prequel story.
With Mickey himself, there's the potential for a Netflix spinoff to go back to his earliest days as a lawyer when he's just starting out in the field. A series could explore how Manuel Garcia-Rulfo's titular Lincoln Lawyer really became the Lincoln Lawyer, and perhaps even dive into how Mickey and Maggie originally met and fell in love before getting married.
In regard to Mickey's immediate family, a possible prequel could showcase Legal Siegal (played by Elliott Gould in The Lincoln Lawyer) and Mickey's late father, Mickey Haller Sr., at the height of their careers in their youth. The two Lincoln Lawyer characters were formerly law partners and had fierce reputations within LA's legal world, with their legacy having a profound influence on Mickey Haller in the current TV show.
Another character whose mysterious background is ripe for a spinoff is Dennis "Cisco" Wojciechowski. Cisco is introduced in The Lincoln Lawyer season 1 as Lorna's boyfriend, who Mickey hires as his private investigator. Like others in Mickey's circle, Cisco also has a dangerous past, having been part of the Road Saints biker gang before becoming Mickey's investigator. As such, a potential Cisco series could give The Lincoln Lawyer its own Sons of Anarchy-style spinoff.
All 10 episodes of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 release on Netflix on Thursday, February 5.
There's a myriad of possible spinoffs for Netflix to explore with The Lincoln Lawyer, but, as Ted Humphrey stated, whether any may happen depends on audience demand for more in this TV universe. Following the performance of season 4 in February, Netflix's interest in moving forward with expanding the universe may become more clear.
