Luffy is saved by a lightning strike in One Piece season 2, episode 1, which may not have been an accident after all. The ending of One Piece season 2 saw Luffy and his friends vow to save Alabasta from Baroque Works. This teased the story of One Piece season 3, with the Straw Hats now firmly in the Grand Line.
Before entering the iconic location, though, One Piece's cast of characters stopped off at Loguetown. There, they were ambushed by Buggy and Alvida, two pirates from season 1 who were seeking revenge against Luffy. As Buggy attempted to execute Luffy, however, a lightning bolt suddenly ripped through Gold Roger's platform, saving the young pirate.
Amid several One Piece Easter eggs and big battles, this lightning bolt comes as a surprise, coincidentally saving Luffy right before his death. That said, there may be some evidence that the lightning bolt was not a coincidence, linking to a mysterious One Piece season 2 character.
The Lightning Strike In One Piece Season 2 Was (Probably) Caused By Dragon
Warning! The following sections contain minor spoilers for the original One Piece manga.
The character in question is One Piece's Dragon, the mysterious hooded stranger who saved Luffy from Smoker in the final moments of season 2, episode 1. Dragon is the leader of the Revolutionary Army, an organization opposing the World Government, whose interest in Luffy is yet to be revealed in the Netflix One Piece adaptation.
Based on what is known in the manga, though, there are signs indicating that Dragon saved Luffy twice in this episode. Although Dragon's exact powers have still somehow yet to be revealed in the source material, there are strong hints that he can control the weather. In One Piece season 2, episode 1, for instance, Dragon seemingly controls the wind to disperse Smoker.
Scenes similar to this in the manga and the One Piece anime indicate the same: that Dragon controls weather elements such as wind and storms. Therefore, it stands to reason that Dragon conjured the lightning strike that saved Luffy from Buggy. Dragon seemed intent on keeping Luffy alive, further supporting this idea.
What Devil Fruit Dragon Could Have In One Piece
If this theory is to be believed, it is likely that Dragon has consumed a Devil Fruit. As with the true nature of his powers, though, One Piece has yet to confirm this outright. This means that Dragon's potential Devil Fruit is entirely speculation, but it is still highly likely that he has consumed one in the past.
A similar Devil Fruit has been shown in One Piece via a character named Enel, an enemy of the Straw Hat Pirates. Enel possessed the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, which allowed him to manipulate lightning. However, his powers were limited to this, and the character never showed any control over other aspects of weather, such as wind.
Dragon has, meaning another Devil Fruit that allows control over a wider array of weather types is possible. Whether One Piece ever reveals this remains to be seen, but given that the manga is currently in its final saga, it should be sooner rather than later.
If Dragon does indeed have Devil Fruit powers, it will be all but confirmed that the lightning strike that saved Luffy from Buggy in One Piece season 2, episode 1 was intentional.
