James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
There's no doubt that The Legend of Zelda feels like it's going through a really exciting moment as a franchise right now, and that's all without confirmation of the next mainline game in the single-player series. The series is celebrating 40 years since its debut this year, and they are all sorts of exciting projects on the way that should mark the occasion in style.
The most notable one for many will be the return of Ocarina of Time in the form of a remake, and we don't have too long to wait, with that set to release later this year. Not only that, but production on the movie is also continuing smoothly by all accounts, with that set to follow in relatively short order in April 2027.
Now, Nintendo has weighed in on the future of the franchise as part of that, and it could have wide-reaching consequences for all of Nintendo's IPs moving forward.
Nintendo Has Issued A Statement On Zelda
Over on Twitter/X, the user Stealth shared a statement from Nintendo, in which they confirmed their plans moving forward, and if you can decipher all of the opaque language, it's actually quite exciting:
"A live-action movie of The Legend of Zelda is planned for release in 2027. Going forward, we will take a variety of approaches to continually create contact points with Nintendo characters all over the world, working to convey the appeal of Nintendo's entertainment offerings to an even wider audience."
The idea that Nintendo wants to grow its audience shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but the fact that they're will to stray even further from their tried and tested formula is interesting. For a long time, Nintendo was the only one of the big video game companies that resisted their IPs heading over to other mediums (for the most part).
We've obviously seen that change a fair bit in recent times with the arrival of the Mario movies, and with Zelda coming down the pipeline and the intention of starting similar projects, this really could be the start of a major new era for the company.
There is definitely a certain amount of corporate speak going on in the statement above, and "contact point" isn't really a phrase that we have ever come across before. Educated guess, it just means that Nintendo wants to introduce people to their characters in as many ways as possible, likely signaling that they are doubling down on adaptations to other mediums.
Whatever they do decide to do, we certainly have The Legend of Zelda movie to look forward to next year, and if that does well, the statement above does make it sound like it could easily be the start of a burgeoning franchise.
