In a new sci-fi series, two survivors venture across a ruined post-apocalypse - but what they face isn't The Last of Us' human-sized Clickers, but towering monsters who'd be more at home in Attack on Titan.

That's the pitch for new series Only the Savage Are Left, but it's also only the beginning, with two grim twists that make this post-apocalyptic road trip unmissable for any fan of zombie fiction.

Some of the best sci-fi fiction out there is set after the end of the world, as a lone survivor takes off on a mission of survival. That's what Only the Savage Are Left is offering, but this isn't an average zombie virus, and this lone survivor isn't the classic two-fisted antihero...

Only the Savage Are Left Is a Visually Impressive 'Monster Apocalypse'

Recently, Dark Horse Comics announced new series Only the Savage Are Left. The series depicts a world where the Terata Virus has spread across the world, transforming its victims into towering monsters. However, there is a way to stay human - kill, burn and inhale other victims, staving off the effects with an act of calculated inhumanity.

Into this twisted post-apocalypse, a kid wielding a handgun and a road sign-turned-shield embarks on a quest to find his missing love, making a solemn vow that whatever happens, he won't let this world turn him into a monster. Enjoy the official trailer for the first issue below:

Coming from Zack Kaplan, Stefano Raffaele, Thiago Rocha and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Only the Savage Are Left offers up a unique world - one where society is now split between mindless monsters, brutal monster hunters and hopeless innocents, with death around every corner. Dark Horse's summary for the first issue reads:

A strange virus has spread across the world, transforming its victims into monsters. The only cure is to kill another infected soul. When a nonviolent young man sets out from the safety of his settlement to find his missing true love, he must face the corrupted world of monsters and monster-killers. A dramatic survival adventure that dares to ask what we should stand for in the monster apocalypse.

- Hit-making author Zack Kaplan (Kill All Immortals, Port of Earth) and Eisner-nominated illustrator Stefano Raffaele (Detective Comics, Alien vs. Captain America) join forces for a post-apocalyptic action-adventure!

- A tale of two lovers fighting for survival in the aftermath of the apocalypse—equal parts harrowing and heartfelt!

- Five-issue series.

Only the Savage Are Left promises several different kinds of monsters, with zombie-esque humans, gigantic monsters, and calculating killers who burn their prey alive. However, it's the hero who seems like the most interesting part of this story...

Only the Savage Are Left's Pacifist Ideals Are a Fascinating Twist

A lot of post-apocalyptic fiction is about how desperate times corrupt those who live through them, and what redemption is possible for those who have waded far out into a life of violence. However, such stories usually take the easy route - by showing lashings of exciting, cinematic violence, followed by a speedy heartfelt redemption/self-sacrifice.

Only the Savage Are Left seems to be doing something more interesting - beginning with a character who refuses to hurt others, even in a world where it's the only reliable way to stave off an infection that robs you of your humanity. Witnessing a pacifist trying to navigate a monster-infested post apocalypse is a unique pitch, and one that sci-fi fans will likely be interested in experiencing.

Only the Savage Are Left takes a The Last of Us road trip through a world ruined by Attack on Titan monsters, but with the unique twists of monster hunters 'smoking' their prey to stay human and a hero who already knows violence isn't the answer, and has sworn not to lose sight of that simple truth.

Only the Savage Are Left #1 is coming June 3 from Dark Horse Comics.
