Yesterday, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy seemed soundly (or unsoundly, depending on which Marvel video game fans you ask) laid to rest. Nobody would’ve expected to hear from it again, and the fact that it apparently underwhelmed financially suggests that there won’t be a sequel in the works, much less any new Guardians of the Galaxy game, any time soon.

New Marvel and DC games, in particular, are all basically shakily attempting to balance on a tightrope, and no game is safe from being canceled. That’s why, against all odds, it’s quite alarming to suddenly see that the Nintendo Switch 2 Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy leak from several months ago was legitimate, as there will indeed be a new port and update.

As per Twitter/X, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is miraculously being revived this holiday season with not only a spontaneous Nintendo Switch 2 port, but also a special version dubbed the “Encore Edition” that features exclusive 1980s glam-rock-inspired skins. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition will target 30 fps 1440p/40 fps 1080p for Quality/Performance modes in TV mode, respectively, and 30 fps while handheld. Moreover, the game will also have a physical Game-Key Card release.

The brand-new skins are on-brand for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a game that is steeped in music from that era, thanks to its protagonist, Peter Quill’s Star-Lord. Essentially, when all worn simultaneously, players can assemble and dress the Guardians of the Galaxy as if they’re a rock band like Kiss.

Pre-ordering now can net fans a 10% discount, knocking it down from an already fairly economical $39.99 USD to $35.99 USD on the Nintendo Store.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is scheduled to be released on November 5, 2026, and it’s a version that only Nintendo Switch 2 users will be fortunate enough to get their hands on. This might turn out to be a wonderful incentive for Marvel fans who haven’t yet bought a Nintendo Switch 2 to finally do so, especially considering how much praise there is for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as one of Marvel’s most underrated games.

It’s startling that it had apparently performed as poorly as it did due to how much of an outpouring of love there is for it anywhere it’s brought up. Of course, a Nintendo Switch 2 port and new skins don’t imply that more than a few fingers dug their way out of the casket Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is buried in, and fans shouldn’t have their hopes up too high for a future that still looks quite bleak.
