'The Gorge' — 9 Things You Need To Know About Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy's Supernatural Action Movie

1 month ago 20

Two assassins are tied together by a deadly secret this Valentine’s Day. Coming up next on Apple TV+’s movie roster is the sci-fi horror action film The Gorge. Directed by Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), the film follows Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Levi (Miles Teller) as two opposing assassins who are given the same task: guard the Gorge — a seemingly bottomless, misty crevice in the middle of the countryside nowhere. What they don’t realize is that there is a sinister force lurking right underneath them, completely invisible but with a presence so menacing that they could feel it thousands of feet above it.

With the first reports of the project announced in 2020, and filming beginning in 2023, The Gorge has been in the long time making. Featuring Taylor-Joy and Teller’s undeniable chemistry, driven by real-life friendship, and Derrickson’s decades of experience in the horror genre, The Gorge promises to deliver a cross-genre work that is both terrifying and nuanced. Without further ado, here’s everything we know so far about The Gorge.

Watch the Trailer for 'The Gorge'

The trailer for The Gorge introduces two highly trained snipers assigned to guard a deep crevice in the ground for a year. The only catch is that the two have no idea what’s contained in it. Constantly staying in the dark due to the nature of her murderous profession, Drasa (Taylor-Joy) is required to hide even further in the shadows. This new assignment of hers will not only dispatch Drasa to an unknown location, but also for 365 days, or possibly even longer. On the other end is Levi (Teller), an elite sniper who currently doesn’t have a lot going on his plate — making him the perfect candidate to take on the same mission as Drasa.

With Drasa assigned to the East Tower Observation Post, and Teller to the West, their mission is simple: stop what’s in the Gorge from coming out. As the clip reveals, the Gorge is essentially a “door to hell” locking a beastly creature from causing a full-blown apocalypse on Earth. Although outside communication is strictly forbidden, Drasa and Levi can’t help but connect with each other through long-distance means (even playing a game of chess, a cheeky nod to Taylor-Joy’s days in The Queen’s Gambit.) But their days of simply guarding the gate are cut short when the monster decides to erupt from down people. With the two now stuck on the misty bottom of the Gorge, they’ll have to rely on each other for survival.

Although news of the project began to surface in 2020, it was only until late 2022 when casting for The Gorge was announced. One of the first few actors confirmed was Teller. By the time of the announcement, the Whiplash actor was enjoying the wave of the blockbuster summer hit Top Gun: Maverick and starred alongside Chris Hemsworth in Netflix’s Spiderhead. In a conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at CCXP in Brazil, Teller shared what drew him to The Gorge in the first place.

“We're always looking for something that feels original, and this was entirely original. I just thought it was so incredibly creative. I really felt for both of these characters. There's such a longing, there's such an isolation, and all the things that come with having to do what they do for a career. Some of my best friends are in the military, and for what they're required to do, there needs to be an outlet. You can't carry it inside you — we know what the ramifications are of that. So, I was just so excited to film those scenes with Anya.”

The Witch and Split also stars Taylor-Joy as Teller’s opposing assassin. Following her global success with The Queen’s Gambit, Taylor-Joy dabbled in the culinary horror feast The Menu and got her gears running in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The star is slated to star in Apple TV+’s adaption of the bestselling novel “Lucky”, with reports of filming to begin in spring 2025. Also in a conversation with Weintraub, the actress shared the reasons why she joined The Gorge.

“Oh, I was really excited to work with Miles [Teller]. We’re all good friends, but we’ve been wanting to work together for a really long time.”

“I think I was intrigued by the fact that it was semi genre-less in the sense that it was both a love story and an action movie. So, I was excited about that.”

Taking on the director’s seat is Derrickson, whose recent works include The Black Phone, starring Ethan Hawke as a serial child killer known as The Grabber. Having dabbled into the superhero genre with Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Derrickson has always been a horror connoisseur throughout most of his filmmaking career. Over the past 20 years, Derrickson has scared audiences with movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us from Evil. Also on Derrickson’s 2025 roster is The Black Phone 2, which is currently in post-production.

The Gorge is produced by Skydance Media, who have been involved in the project since their bidding war for the script in the fall of 2020. The Gorge isn’t Derrikson’s first foray with the production house. The two parties are reported to be working on the action-adventure movie Bermuda, starring Chris Evans against the spooky sea graveyard. However, since the project’s announcement, things have gone quiet, presumably in long development.

Also joining Derrickson is Dean, who’s in charge of the film’s screenplay. Having worked on movies such as Deadfall and The Tomorrow War — the latter a collaboration with Skydance. The Gorge is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger for Skydance, alongside Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Sherryl Clark through Crooked Highway as well as Adam Kolbrenner, Dean, and Gregory Goodman. Teller executive produces.
