When David Robert Mitchell is in the director’s chair, you never quite know what you’re going to get. After launching his career with the indie coming-of-age comedy “The Myth of the American Sleepover,” the Michigan native delivered one of the most acclaimed horror movies of the century with “It Follows.” After that, he made the endlessly creative (and just as polarizing) neo-noir “Under the Silver Lake” before taking an eight year hiatus from feature filmmaking.
Now he’s preparing to return on the largest scale of his career with “The End of Oak Street,” an original science fiction movie that sees him working with a studio budget for the first time in his career. The Warner Bros. film is produced by J.J. Abrams through his Bad Robot production label and stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as a suburban couple forced to navigate a situation that, if the new teaser is to be believed, apparently includes dinosaurs.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “After a mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street from suburbia and transports their neighborhood to someplace unknown, the Platt family soon discovers that their very survival depends on them sticking together as they navigate their now unrecognizable surroundings.”
The film, which was previously announced with the title “Flowervale Street,” also stars Maisy Stella, Christian Convery, Jordan Alexa Davis, P.J. Byrne, and Chris Coy. Other executive producers include Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, Matt Jackson, and Tommy Harper.
Mitchell’s fans should also be relieved that it’s unlikely to be another eight year wait for the auteur’s next film. He is also slated to direct an “It Follows” sequel, appropriately titled “They Follow.” Star Maika Monroe is reprising her role from the first film, telling IndieWire in 2024 that, “I just know that David wouldn’t do a sequel if it wasn’t going to be incredible, and the script is so fucking good. I’m obsessed. I’m just so excited to step into playing Jay again and just where you find her, it’s going to be great.”
Warner Bros. will release “The End of Oak Street” exclusively in theaters on Friday, August 14. Watch the teaser below.
