The Elder Scrolls feels as inevitable as taxes. Bethesda might take a long time to develop them, but they'll arrive eventually, because people's insatiable need to consume fantasy stories in wide-open worlds is unparalleled. While the post-apocalyptic setting gives a lot of the genre a run for its money, fantasy is a reliable setting.

That said, it's been 15 years since the last Elder Scrolls game. Come November 11, Skyrim will have been out for a decade and a half, with no new game in sight beyond the latest updates to The Elder Scrolls Online. However, we're getting our first signs of life this year for The Elder Scrolls 6, which was announced back in 2018 at E3.

Based on an official confirmation on X, we may know what the next Elder Scrolls will be called.

In the past few months, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma allegedly tested a build of The Elder Scrolls 6. This is one of the first times it's ever been reported as playable, and the CEO took to X to chat about it.

Here's the full post: "Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater." Bethesda responded in turn with this message: "It was great being able to show you ********. Thank you for the kind words and a wonderful visit."

To be clear, that's eight characters, which could be the first title tease. Although a game called The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard already exists, that doesn't stop Bethesda from titling the next mainline entry The Elder Scrolls 6: Redguard. Some fans are disappointed that Hammerfell doesn't seem possible, though that assumes the character count is 100% accurate.

Other options include "Dominion" and "Cyrodiil." The latter would be interesting, since it's already been featured in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Of course, Bethesda could also make up a region, or give it a generic moniker, and have it span several regions.

A lot of fans are hoping that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a physical release on Project Helix, the next console generation that Xbox is currently planning: "Launch with Helix exclusive. Make it a physical game. Win."

Others are just hoping it's exclusive, which seems likely for the Xbox brand right now. Sony is also getting out of the multi-platform business in many ways, so we could see a full return to the era of exclusives with the next generation.

No matter how The Elder Scrolls 6 turns out, fans will be there day one to either adore it or scrutinize it. Open-world games are a tough business, but given Bethesda's lack of output in recent years, folks are wondering how they'll deliver on a game that's been in the works for nearly a decade.
