The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You season 2 is easily one of the most hotly anticipated anime of winter 2025, if not 2025, in general. The anime’s parody take on the harem genre and surprisingly strong character writing made season 1 a breakout hit, and season 2 will surely be even better.
100 Girlfriends season 2 will surely be a hit for the winter 2025 anime season, but unfortunately, things might not be great behind the scenes. The brutal working conditions of the anime industry have become well-known in recent years, and now, comments from a major staff member for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You season 2 suggest the anime is facing major production issues. That’s terrible to think about for fans of the anime, but more importantly, it shows that the anime industry is still as bad as people think it is.
100 Girlfriends’ Character Designer Paints A Bleak Picture Of Season 2’s Production
With only about a week left before the premiere of 100 Girlfriends season 2, Akane Yano, the lead character designer for the anime, took to X and posted a series of distressing comments about how stressed out she was, saying things like how the “countdown to despair” had begun and how “the tears won’t stop and I can’t draw”. Akane Yano doesn’t explicitly say what she’s talking about, but considering her profession, and especially the comment about how she can’t draw, the comments from 100 Girlfriends character designer Akane Yano suggest that season 2 has been terrible to work on.
Looking at Bibury Animation Studios’ schedule, it’s unfortunately easy to see why Akane Yano would be feeling stressed out. Not only is 100 Girlfriends airing at the same time as Grisaia: Phantom Trigger The Animation, but next season sees the premiere of the Witch Watch anime, the studio’s first time doing an anime for consecutive cours. Add in how it took so long for promotional material to come out, and any potential production issues for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You season 2 are likely a result of how stretched thin Bibury Animation Studios is.
100 Girlfriends’ Character Designer Suggests That Things Aren’t As Bad As They Seem
Things don’t look good for 100 Girlfriends season 2, but they might be better than one would think. The day after Akane Yano posted her series of distressing comments, she took to X again to not only thank everyone for their messages, but to clarify that her comments weren’t about her work and were instead about something else in her life. Akane Yano’s most recent comments suggest that the production for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You season 2 is actually fine, and more importantly, her mental health doesn’t appear to be suffering, either.
Some people, however, have posited that Akane Yano might have been forced to say that everything at work was fine; it took almost two days for her to say that she wasn’t talking about work, and with how viral her comments became, some people believe she was pressured by the studio to retract her statements before things got worse. That being said, there’s no way to know if Akane Yano was being coerced into making her most recent comments about 100 Girlfriends season 2’s production, and for the sake of her privacy, people shouldn’t try and look into it.
The Anime Industry Needs To Make A Stronger Effort To Change Its Parasitic Practices
The Anime Industry Is Still In Trouble, Even If 100 Girlfriends Isn't
Regardless of whether or not 100 Girlfriends season 2 is facing production issues, the entire situation is a perfect reminder of how problematic the anime industry has become in recent years. In the pursuit of getting new content out as fast possible, animators are often expected to work on projects down to the very last second with little to no rest, even if doing so makes them physically ill. Jujutsu Kaisen season 2’s production was an infamous source of controversy, and with how recent that was, the anime industry, unfortunately, won’t stop being a terrible place to work anytime soon.
With how controversial the topic has become, some studios have taken measures to try and improve working conditions, with the recent hiatus of the One Piece anime being done to not overwork the staff, so even if things won’t change too quickly, people can hopefully expect a gradual change in how anime studios treat their employees. That’s great to think about with how publicized things have become, and hopefully, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You will prove to be a representation of the positive elements of the industry as opposed to the negative.
