Zach Moser has been writing for ScreenRant since 2022, covering movies, classic TV, and streaming TV. His areas of expertise cover a wide range of genres with a particular interest in horror and drama, and the conversations around the TV and film industry. When he's not covering the latest film releases or chronicling the latest season of a new show, he's writing humor pieces for McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Slackjaw, and Points In Case or working on short stories and his second novel.

The Boys is over but the franchise is set to return in 2027 with a series that has a lot of expectations riding on it. After five years as one of the biggest shows on television, Prime Video's The Boys came to an end in May 2026, leaving a hole that we used to fill with sociopathic superheroes squishing heads and morally grey rebels cursing like sailors.

With Gen V canceled, and The Boys: Mexico stuck in a TV production quagmire, the only remaining light for those groping around in the dark post-The Boys is Vought Rising, a prequel to The Boys that is set to premiere in 2027. There's been a trailer and cast news, and it seems pretty certain we'll be getting a new show in the franchise.

The series will be set in the 1950s and depict the beginning of Vought, the mega-corporation that invented Compound V, a serum capable of transforming ordinary humans into super-powerered titans. We've had hints about the origins of Vought throughout The Boys, and none of them have suggested altruistic beginnings.

Jensen Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy, will star in the series alongside Aya Cash as Stormfront and Mason Dye as Bombsight, who have all appeared in The Boys. Newcomers include Will Hochman as Torpedo and Elizabeth Posey as Private Angel. Vought Rising is the start of a new era for The Boys, and it will have to do some heavy lifting for the franchise.

Vought Rising Is More Than Just A Prequel Series

Most prequel TV shows end up being ancillary to the original show, a bonus for those invested in the franchise. As well-liked as Gen V was, for example, it was never going to be as big as The Boys, and as season 5 proved, those characters ended up only being a piece of the larger story.

If Gen V had continued, and if The Boys: Mexico was a bit more certain, Vought Rising might just be considered another spinoff. A show for the serious fans that lets them dig deeper into the lore and history of The Boys comics. Now, with no other The Boys shows airing, Vought Rising has to hold up the whole franchise.

Vought Rising isn't just a prequel series any longer; it's the only The Boys show, and it has to bring in similar viewership as the flagship show. This won't be an easy task, considering the underwhelming nature of The Boys, which let the air out of the entire franchise. Vought Rising has to bring back the excitement.

The show can't just be an interesting diversion; it has to be a tentpole in its own right. The hope, originally, was that The Boys would be the major title from which spinoffs, prequels, and sequels could extend. Instead, it seems like Amazon is going to have to shift things around so that Vought Rising is the main attraction.

It's only been a few weeks since The Boys' season finale, and already, it seems like interest in the property has gone down. For the franchise to succeed, it needs a main attraction, not a sideshow. The success of Vought Rising, then, and the franchise as a whole, will depend on whether the show runners were aware of the critical need for their show to be a success while they were making it.
