The Best Deities To Worship As A Cleric In Baldur's Gate 3

1 week ago 7

The cleric is one of the most underrated classes in Baldur's Gate 3. Though often sidelined as a healer, clerics can access some of the game's most useful and powerful damage-dealing spells. They are also one of the most customizable classes, the only class in the base game allowing you to choose a specific deity to worship.

There are 20 deities in BG3 that clerics can worship. They all have unique ties to the world of Faerûn and will grant unique interactions. For example, you can pray to any deity at the Stormshore Tabernacle in Act 3. However, some choices will unlock more content than others and are arguably better.

Drow Clerics Of Lolth Or Eilistraee Shine In The Underdark

The Two Deities React Differently To The Phalar Aluve

Several deities are unique to certain races in Baldur's Gate 3; only Duergar can worship Laduger, and only Githyanki can worship the lich queen Vlaakith. However, the race-specific deity with the most interesting content is Lolth, the leader of the Dark Seldarine pantheon, who is perfect for an evil playthrough. There are two sub-race options for drow, and she is the only deity that Lolth-sworn clerics can worship. Lolth's daughter, Eilistraee, is also an option for clerics to follow, but unlike her mother, she can be worshiped by a character of any race.

Location/Event

Lolth Cleric Interaction

Act 1 - Shattered Sanctum, Goblin Camp

You can convince the giant spiders to fight for them against the goblins by making them believe that they are the avatar of Lolth.

Act 2 - after using the Spider Lyre

Lolth's clerics can insult Kar'niss and call him an abomination to their queen.

Act 2/3 - after recruiting Minthara

As a Lolth-sworn drow herself, Lolth's clerics have several unique dialogue options with Minthara. She will disapprove of most of these, as she has scorned the Spider Queen.

In the Underdark, you can find a longsword called Phalar Aluve stuck in a stone; a cleric of Eilistraee will recognize it as a means to perform an ancient blood ritual and feel her blessing if they decide to remove it. Meanwhile, though a cleric of Lolth can remove the sword, they will experience a unique scene where Lolth delivers a warning not to displease her again. The two goddesses have an ancient feud, so Lolth will heavily disapprove of her clerics doing anything to honor Eilistraee.

Clerics Of Tyr And Kelemvor Unlock Unique Dialogue In Act 1

Even Deities That Aren't Linked To The Main Plot Have Some Interesting Content

Throughout the game, you will come across groups that follow all kinds of gods and goddesses. However, you cannot worship all of these yourself, and deities in BG3, such as Umberlee, are missing from the cleric customization menu. Karlach's Act 1 quest involves hunting down (or siding with) a group of fake paladins of Tyr. However, Tyr's cleric, multiclassed into Paladin, will be able to figure out their deceit by telling Anders to recite "the Creed of the Left Hand," which he cannot do.

Once you meet Withers in Act 1, Kelemvor's clerics can have a unique conversation with him. As followers of the god of the dead, they can tell him that he looks familiar. Later, they can ask if he is also a follower of Kelemvor, given his undead nature, however, he is not. This is one of the conversations that has led theorists to believe that Withers' real identity is linked with the scribe of the dead, Jergal, or that he, at the least, has some affiliation with him.

Worshipping Selûne Or Mystra Can Lead To Hilarious Conversations With The Companions

Clerics Of Selûne Have The Best Dynamic With Shadowheart

Gale conjures an image of Mystra in Baldur's Gate 3

Clerics of Mystra and Selûne have the most unique dialogue options in the game due to their links to the companion characters. In Act 1, the clerics of Mystra are the only type of clerics who gain an advantage when trying to calm the magic around Gale's portal. They can also have funny reactions after learning about his history with the goddess. Mystra is one of the only deities in the game with a tangible presence; as Gale's Act 3 storyline involves seeing her in person, she's one of the best choices to feel more connected to the story.

If you plan to convert Shadowheart back into a Selunite, you shouldn't always choose the dialogue options associated with Selûne. I once made the mistake of going all-out on role-playing as a devout Selunite cleric. I tried to convince Shadowheart not to kill the Nightsong by picking the Selunite dialogue instead of leaving her to her own devices. It turns out that having a Selunite rattle in her ear about the Moonmaiden doesn't exactly encourage her not to become a Dark Justiciar.

Selûne is the "default" goddess to worship, and it's no surprise why. Selunites have some of the best conversation options with Shadowheart and possibly the most rewarding romance option with her. They also particularly shine in Act 2, as Isobel, another cleric of Selûne, and the Moonmaiden's daughter are large parts of the plot. Though every cleric option in Baldur's Gate 3 has unique content, the best option for those unsure would likely be Selûne due to her ties to the rest of the story and the potential for interesting character dynamics.
