Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
The Batman and The Batman: Part 2 co-writer Mattson Tomlin recently teased that there could be another chapter of his Batman: The Imposter comic book limited series. The Batman and Batman: The Imposter are not connected in any way, but they both undoubtedly boast the same tone and atmosphere, with Bruce Wayne’s Batman being in his formative crime-fighting years.
Responding to a fan on Twitter/X who asked whether we’d see Batman: The Imposter’s take on the character again, Mattson Tomlin replied, “It’s possible.” Now, the writer is a seasoned veteran when it comes to having to be ambiguous on social media, but this comment is nowhere near a ‘no,’ and that’s enough to suggest a Batman: The Imposter sequel may be in the works.
Batman: The Imposter 2 Has Been Teased
Batman: The Imposter is a phenomenal three-issue miniseries that explores Batman and GCPD detective Blair Wong’s investigation into the titular ‘imposter,’ who is dressed like Batman and killing people. Mature and dark, Batman: The Imposter serves as a wonderful precursor to Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie, bleeding all the color out of some of the character’s more whimsical interpretations.
Batman: The Imposter is terrific as an intimate, self-contained story, and yet it’s fantastic to hear that Mattson Tomlin may be inspired to continue it somehow. It’d be fascinating to see what other characters he chooses to depict if there was a sequel to the comic, and in the same way as it’s compelling to imagine what characters will be cast for The Batman: Part 2, as they are both such novel iterations of the Batman mythology, choosing to lean on grimy, realistic noir tales and not rely on fantastical DC elements at all.
We’re Getting a Lot of Early-Years Batman
Even if The Batman: Imposter’s sequel doesn’t release until after The Batman: Part 2, that’ll be a lot of this flavor of Batman in a short period. The mainline, ongoing comic book series of Batman, for instance, is far more vibrant and lighthearted, with many current comic runs hammering home an emphasis on the Bat-family.
Therefore, like Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman’s Batman: Dark Patterns, Batman: The Imposter and The Batman are ironically more niche for telling stories about Bruce when he’s only been Batman for a few years and has too few companions to count on or confide in. A Batman: The Imposter sequel has the potential to be an incredible comic, and it’ll be interesting to see if anything happens to manifest from Mattson Tomlin’s optimistic response.
