She already knew who Joey was at that point because he was a contestant on Charity Lawson's season of The Bachelorette. Joey made it to the final two, but Charity gave her final rose to someone else. This didn't give Kelsey much more time with her mother before she had to say goodbye, and the pain remained very fresh for Kelsey.

During The Bachelor season 28, Kelsey took Joey home during her hometown date, to introduce him to her father. Mark gave the young couple a photo album filled with photos of him and his late wife.
