EXCLUSIVE: Cinematic Media has signed Canadian filmmaker Charlie Tyrell following the Sundance premiere of his feature directorial debut, The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, with plans to rep him across all media.
Co-directed with Academy-Award winner Daniel Roher (Navalny), The AI Doc explores the existential dangers and stunning promise of artificial intelligence amidst its booming proliferation. Produced by Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Daniel Kwan and Jonathan Wang, as well as Diane Becker, Shane Boris (Fire of Love), and Ted Tremper, the film will next play at SXSW before Focus Features releases it theatrically on March 27th.
Tyrell is otherwise best known for the autobiographical short, My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes, which was shortlisted for the 2019 Academy Awards and won the Canadian Screen Award for best documentary short as well as a Cinema Eye Honors Award. His subsequent film, Broken Orchestra, screened at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and won awards at the Florida Film Festival and the Philadelphia Film Festival.
Tyrell has also directed branded content and music videos, with his narrative and nonfiction work screening at festivals such as TIFF, Hot Docs, DOC NYC, Tribeca, and many more, in addition to the aforementioned Sundance and SXSW. Additionally, his work has been presented online by the New York Times’ Op-Docs, The Atlantic, Vimeo Staff Picks, CBC Gem, Short of the Week, and Topic.
