Last summer, one of the greatest movie franchises returned with its latest big-budget installment, attempting to provide a soft reboot following the critical failure of the last outing. Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World Rebirth snagged an MCU favorite in Scarlett Johansson to lead a star-studded cast, and set itself five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion to try and create enough distance to craft a new narrative. The film might've proven a box office success, earning approximately $869 million worldwide against a production budget of $180 million, but could it find success with critics?
Alas, a lack of depth and originality left most disappointed, even if audiences kept coming back for more. Scoring just 50% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer wrote, "It’s sloppy, sappy, frenetic, charmless, plotless, derivative and devoid of surprise and characters to give a damn about," whilst Collider's own Aidan Kelley wrote in his review, "There's some fun to be had here, but overall, Jurassic World Rebirth feels indicative that this franchise is not dissimilar from what the original film is trying to say about the ethics of cloning dinosaurs." It's true that, when leaving their theatrical screening, many were yearning for the adrenaline-fueled days of the first movie.
Well, several months on, and that's exactly what many are doing. At the time of writing, Jurassic Park is one of the ten most-streamed movies on AMC+ in the U.S. Steven Spielberg's genius monster movie was both a huge thrill ride and a philosophically driven story that questions how far humanity can go when playing God. One of the most important blockbusters of all time, few films will ever match the genius of Jurassic Park.
'Jurassic Park' Was an Enormous Box Office Success
Not just beloved by critics and audiences, Jurassic Park also left a dino-sized footprint on the 1993 box office. Against a reported budget of $63 million, the film has earned an eye-watering $1.05 billion in global revenue to date, which includes several re-releases as recent as 2023. Easily the highest-grossing movie of 1993, earning more than double the second-placed Mrs. Doubtfire worldwide, Jurassic Park still ranks highly among many current box office lists, including placing seventh in the list of highest-grossing Universal movies worldwide and 14th in non-sequel movies.
The beloved Jurassic Park is streaming now on AMC+. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming stories.
