Rohan Naahar is a Weekend News Writer for Collider. From Francois Ozon to David Fincher, he'll watch anything once.

He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.

Director Ryan Coogler's Sinners recently set the record for the most Oscar nominations ever, with 16. The movie was also a major box office hit, grossing more than $360 million worldwide against a reported budget of $90 million. The previous record for the most Oscar nominations earned was 14, held by three films — All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Among these three, one stands out. The movie won in 12 categories at the 1998 Oscars, and became the first film in cinema history to gross over $1 billion at the global box office. The film's cumulative worldwide haul has now grown to more than $2 billion, thanks to its numerous re-releases over the years. It remains a generation-defining hit, and is largely responsible for launching the careers of two major A-listers who are operating at the peak of their powers to this day. And now, the movie in question is heading to a new streaming site where a new generation of viewers can admire its old-fashioned achievements.

The movie, of course, is Titanic — director James Cameron's disaster epic with a doomed romance at the center. The film was released in 1997 to near-unanimous praise, despite fielding months of negative buzz around its escalating budget and on-set troubles. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in roles that would make them stars, Titanic was written off by many in the months leading up to its release. Cameron had a similar experience with his 2009 epic Avatar, which defied the odds and emerged as an even bigger hit. Titanic's current global gross stands at $2.2 billion, making it the fourth-biggest hit in history behind Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar. The movie holds a "Certified Fresh" 88% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "A mostly unqualified triumph for James Cameron, who offers a dizzying blend of spectacular visuals and old-fashioned melodrama."

However, the renowned critic Richard Corliss, writing for Time, wrote that the movie was "dead in the water." Titanic proved him wrong and stood the test of time; it continues to earn millions whenever it is re-released in theaters. But starting March 2026, fans will be able to access it on the Starz streaming service. Cameron's latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. Meanwhile, DiCaprio is up for an Oscar this year for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, which earned 13 nods compared to Sinners' 16.
