Ted Lasso Season 4 Closer To Happening As 3 Actors Sign Contracts To Return

1 month ago 16

After over a year of uncertainty about the show's future, Ted Lasso season 4 has gotten its first major update. Co-created by and starring Jason Sudeikis, the Apple TV+ comedy show followed the story of the titular American college football coach being hired to coach the fictional Premier League soccer team, AFC Richmond, with his relentless optimism shaping the players and owner for the better. After two acclaimed seasons, Sudeikis indicated that Ted Lasso season 3 would be the end for the show, though other creatives have remained hopeful for the show's future.

Deadline has brought word that Warner Bros. Television has picked up contracts to bring three original actors back for Ted Lasso season 4. The three actors include Rebecca Walton's Hannah Waddingham, Roy Kent's Brett Goldstein, who also wrote multiple episodes of the original show, and Leslie Higgins' Jeremy Swift. Sources report that the studio will now begin reaching out to the rest of the cast to make new deals for their returns, but that scheduling and budget approval are still needed for a season 4 greenlight.

Ted Lasso's Cast Update Is Great (But Season 4 Has A Long Road Ahead)

The confirmation of Waddingham, Goldstein and Swift signing new contracts for a potential Ted Lasso season 4 may be a great sign for the show's return, though there are still a number of hurdles facing it. Sudeikis has frequently expressed his uncertainty about returning to his hit show, feeling that he sent off his character in a fitting fashion. To his credit, the Ted Lasso season 3 finale did see Sudeikis' fan-favorite coach return home to be with his family, leaving behind the Richmond manager position to Roy, who continues to coach the team with Nate and Beard.

The other major hurdle facing season 4's chances is the fact that much of the Ted Lasso cast have lined up other projects in the time since season 3. Jamie Tartt star Phil Dunster went on to land a main role in Prime Video's The Devil's Hour, while Keeley Jones' Juno Temple recently starred in both Fargo season 5, for which she has a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and the upcoming Venom: The Last Dance, which will also feature Dani Rojas actor Cristo Fernández.

Despite this uncertainty, though, it is interesting to note that with only Waddingham, Goldstein and Swift signed for a potential Ted Lasso season 4, the studio may be eyeing a spinoff sequel in favor of a direct continuation. Sudeikis is on the list of creatives expected to be approached to return for the show's future, however, given his prior reluctance, should he elect not to return, co-creator Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, and the rest of the writing team may be better off pivoting to the spinoff route to keep Ted's emotional sendoff intact.
