EXCLUSIVE: UTA continues to grow its roster of prolific TV creators and showrunners with the addition of Joe Kelly, co-creator of the hit Apple series Ted Lasso. Recent signings also include The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill, Abbott Elementary showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, as well as All Her Fault creator/EP Megan Gallagher.

UTA has signed Kelly for representation in all areas.

Kelly co-created Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, alongside Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, and Brendan Hunt. The critically acclaimed series, which stars Sudeikis as the titular character, won 13 Emmy awards and received 61 nominations across its first three seasons. Although the show was due to conclude after three seasons, Sudeikis decided to continue, and a fourth season was commissioned by the streamer, which will premiere on August 5.

For his contributions to the soccer series as a writer, he received two Emmy Award nominations in 2021, including for the show’s pilot and the episode titled “Make Rebecca Great Again.” Kelly is a shared Emmy winner after the show won two Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022.

Kelly is also the co-creator of the Comedy Central cult hit Detroiters, starring Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson, and now available on Paramount+.

Most recently, Kelly co-wrote the romantic comedy Office Romance for Netflix alongside Brett Goldstein. The Ol Parker-directed film stars Goldstein and Jennifer Lopez. Lopez stars as Jackie Cruz, a CEO at a major airline (she also flies the plane), who falls in love with new company lawyer Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein). Their secret affair puts both at risk of destroying their careers when they decide to “stop playing by the rules and start following their hearts,” according to the official synopsis. The movie will hit Netflix on June 5.

Kelly was previously a co-executive producer on How I Met Your Mother for CBS, as well as a writer for Saturday Night Live.

He continues to be represented by Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
