In response, McRae reassured everyone that she was still Team Canada with a cute little picture shared on her Instagram story. She may have been paid to promote the USA team and the opening ceremony, but deep down, she's still Canada all the way. It was just a paid commercial after all.
The commercial begins with McRae skiing up to an owl, asking it directions to the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan. From the get-go, she already disrespects her home country of Canada by singing the praises of Team USA.
"I'm trying to get to Milan for an amazing opening ceremony and meet Team U.S.A. Then it's the weekend with America's best skating for gold, and Lindsey Vonn's epic comeback."
As a Canadian, seeing a fellow Canadian speaking this way about a rival feels like a betrayal. Plenty of people jumped into the comments to express their dislike of her team choice. After all, Canada and the US are direct rivals when it comes to the Winter Olympics; she can't have switched sides like that.
The majority of people write along the lines of "Go Canada Go," while others laugh at the fact that the commercial chose to use a Canadian to promote the USA team. However, some take it very seriously, with one commenter saying, "Feel free to return your Canadian passport."
According to one source, a Canadian radio station referred to her, in French, as Traître McRae, making a play on her name translating to Traitor McRae. It appears her promotion of Team USA was taken personally by the whole country. She didn't manage to let it slip by without some serious fallout.
However, she has since responded with a cute picture of herself as a child holding a Canadian flag. Over the image are the words "... Y'all know I'm Canadian down." But, it might be too little too late for many of her fans, who see her divided loyalty between the US and Canada as too much of a betrayal. The Winter Olympics are a huge deal for the snowy Canadians.
