Tamron Brings Its 20-40mm f/2.8 Zoom to Nikon Z Mount for $729

Tamron has announced a Nikon Z mount version of its 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, a compact fast-aperture standard zoom for full frame mirrorless cameras that weighs 13.4 oz (380 g) and goes on sale October 22 for $729.

The lens first came out for Sony E-mount as the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (Sony E). The Nikon Z version, Model A062, is developed, manufactured, and sold under a license agreement with Nikon. Tamron calls its size and weight "class-leading" among f/2.8 standard zooms for full frame mirrorless cameras, based on its own comparison as of August 2026. It measures 3.5 inches (88.7mm) from the front of the lens to the mount face and 74.4mm in diameter, and it takes 67mm filters.

A 20-40mm Range, or 30-60mm on APS-C

The zoom runs from 20mm, which Tamron positions for landscapes, to 40mm, which it positions for everyday snapshots and portraits. On an APS-C mirrorless camera, the lens gives a full frame equivalent of 30-60mm. The zoom ring turns through 65 degrees from one end of the range to the other, so a short twist covers the whole zoom.

VXD Linear Motor Autofocus

Focusing is handled by Tamron's VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, which Tamron describes as high-speed and high-precision for both stills and video. Tamron says the compact, light design is an advantage when you shoot video, and it points to the 20mm end for vlogging and selfies. The lens also supports camera key functions.

Close Focus at 6.7 Inches

At 20mm, the lens focuses as close as 6.7 inches (0.17 m) for a maximum magnification of 1:3.8, so you can get close to a subject while the wide view keeps its surroundings in the frame. At 40mm, the minimum focus distance grows to 11.4 inches (0.29 m), and maximum magnification drops to 1:5.1.

Optics and Build

The optical design has 12 elements in 11 groups, including what Tamron calls specialized lens elements. Nine aperture blades form a circular diaphragm, which Tamron says "stays almost perfectly circular up to two stops down from maximum aperture." Minimum aperture is f/22.

Protection comes from moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating. The lens ships with a flower-shaped hood, a front cap, and a rear cap, and it is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility app and TAMRON-LINK.

Who It's For

If you shoot Nikon Z and want a constant f/2.8 zoom that can stay on the camera all day, the lens' 13.4 oz weight and 3.5-inch length suit travel, street, and everyday shooting. The 20mm end covers landscapes, interiors, and handheld vlogging, and the 1:3.8 close focus at 20mm adds close-ups that keep the scene around the subject. If you need reach, look elsewhere, since 40mm won't give you tight headshots, events shot from the back of a room, or sports. On an APS-C body, the 30-60mm equivalent makes it a normal-to-short-telephoto zoom rather than a wide one. The spec sheet lists no optical stabilization, so steadying the image falls to your camera's in-body stabilization, where it has it.
