HBO has now announced the official run time for the Euphoria season 3 finale, and it will be a record-setter. According to the posted run time, the season finale will run for 93 minutes. This will make it the longest TV episode in the network's history.
As a historically ad-free network, HBO is not averse to some non-standard length run times. Game of Thrones and its spinoff show, House of the Dragon, have both been known for extended small-screen stays. Many of House of the Dragon's episodes ran closer to 70 minutes than an hour.
Still, even Game of Thrones longest episode (season 8, episode 3, "The Long Night") was 82 minutes long. The Euphoria season 3 finale will eclipse this, clocking in at 93 minutes. Many of the other previous record holders also belong to Game of Thrones.
Beyond breaking the overall HBO record, this finale will be the longest Euphoria episode by a significant margin. Even the show's most significant episodes rarely cross an hour, and when they do, they just barely squeak over the line. As such, the finale is stepping way outside of Euphoria's typical format.
This extended season finale begs the question of whether this movie-length installment will actually serve as a series wrap-up. As it stands, Euphoria has not been officially canceled post-season 3, making its future unclear. A feature-length final episode, however, would allow ample time for a sense of closure and finality that 50 minutes may not do justice to.
There are other factors that point to the show winding down, too. Euphoria season 3 is getting negative reviews, becoming the first season to get a rotten Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 40%. Fans have not been much kinder to it, as the show has a 43% Popcornmeter and faces vitriolic audiences rooting for its cancellation on a weekly basis.
The elevated profile of stars like Sweeney and Zendaya also would make Euphoria season 4 impractical, especially after the significant gap between the existing seasons. Even after a rocky start, hopefully Sam Levinson and his team have it in them to use their 93 minutes to bring things all together to a satisfying conclusion.
