Quentin Tarantino's The Adventures of Cliff Booth somehow just got even more exciting. It's always a treat whenever a new Quentin Tarantino movie arrives, but it's been way too long since he stepped behind a camera. QT's most recent outing was 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a movie that some have argued is his greatest.
Tarantino's ninth film was an elegiac look back on the Hollywood of yesteryear, and could easily have served as the filmmaker's swansong. Of course, Tarantino has his ten-movie retirement plan in place and fully intends to make one last movie. It feels like that final offering won't be happening in the immediate future, though QT has kept himself busy elsewhere in recent years.
In addition to getting married and having children, he's launched a podcast, penned some books - including a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood novelization - and finally released Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Tarantino also penned a OUATIH sequel dubbed The Adventures of Cliff Booth, following Brad Pitt's titular, morally dubious stuntman.
Netflix picked up the rather expensive tab for the movie (which is said to have cost $200 million), while David Fincher will direct. While Tarantino isn't helming The Adventures of Cliff Booth himself, it will still mark his first feature-length movie in seven long years. The sequel is so anticipated that Netflix is even willing to give it a limited bow in theaters.
Quentin Tarantino's Next Movie Will Officially Get A Theatrical Release
That's right, The Adventures of Cliff Booth will have an IMAX run for two weeks in late November, ahead of its arrival on Netflix on December 23. The sequel was already appointment viewing for movie fans, but getting a chance to see it on the big screen only makes it more exciting. Considering the last couple of David Fincher films have also been Netflix originals, The Adventures of Cliff Booth's IMAX push will be a rare instance to see his work in theaters again.
Netflix is famous (and in some circles, notorious) for refusing to release its biggest movies in theaters, regardless of demand. The likes of the Knives Out sequels or The Rip would have done great business with theatrical pushes, but the platform held firm to its belief that the future of the industry lies with streaming.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth is a different beast, however. Tarantino is an avowed champion of the theatrical experience, and was no doubt nudging for the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up to receive some kind of decent push in theaters. Netflix isn't stupid either, and should see that a Quentin Tarantino/David Fincher movie is destined to become a big earner. If nothing else, its IMAX release should build extra hype for its streaming debut.
Why Netflix Is Releasing More Movies In Theaters
Netflix naturally made headlines with its bid to acquire Warner Bros in late 2025, a race the streamer dropped out of after being outbid by Paramount. The thought of Netflix taking over the iconic studio was nightmarish to some, because it sounded like another nail in the coffin of theaters. Despite the streamer trying to reassure naysayers at the time that they would still release WB movies in theaters, those promises felt hollow.
Leonardo DiCaprio passed on the offer to make a Rick Dalton cameo in The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
Since their bid failed, it's been interesting to note how Netflix has warmed slightly to giving their films theatrical runs. Outside The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Netflix's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew from director Greta Gerwig will also make its debut in cinemas a full two months ahead of its arrival on Netflix in 2027.
This shift is a major swing, but it should be noted the streamer has typically given movies with some awards potential a theatrical run anyway. The Adventures of Cliff Booth is all but guaranteed to receive some major nods (including for Tarantino's screenplay), so Netflix's tactics here aren't entirely about winning over skeptical moviegoers.
