After just one day in theaters, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has already shattered a major box office record.

According to Deadline, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's April 1 release date saw the second installment bring in $34.5 million at the box office, which is the best Wednesday opening for any film released in April and the best 2026 debut so far.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was also released on a Wednesday at the beginning of April 2023, earned $31.7 million on release day and $204.6 million across its five-day opening weekend.

For comparison with other Illumination films, Minions: Rise of Gru ($48.2 million), Minions ($46 million), The Secret Life of Pets ($38.5 million), and Despicable Me 2 ($35 million) all grossed more on their respective openings than The Super Mario Galaxy Movie did.
