An age-rating for Nintendo's upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie might have let slip a major plot point which, if accurate, will finally confirm a fan theory which has been floating about for almost 20 years.

Please be aware of potential spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie below.

The upcoming Mario Bros. Movie sequel has been rated PG in the UK for "mild violence" and "threat" by the BBFC.

Under the 'Theme' tab, the rating board mentions "infrequent very mild upsetting scenes" which "include flashbacks to the separation of a girl and her younger sister". Many have surmised that the girl and her younger sister are Rosalina and Princess Peach, and if they are, this would end speculation about their relationship that has circled for years.

When Super Mario Galaxy initially released back in 2007, many speculated that there was a familial connection between the two ladies. After all, they do look remarkably similar, with their blonde hair and blue eyes, and early developer commentary revealed that when Nintendo was working on Rosalina's backstory for Super Mario Galaxy, it considered making her part of Peach's family. However, this ultimately never happened, and instead any family ties between the two were kept pretty vague.

But, while Nintendo has never made Peach and Rosalina's relationship canon in any of its games so far, fans still speculated the two were either sisters or mother and daughter.

The Super Mario Bros Movie, meanwhile, seemed to hint that Peach's background had some kind of link to Rosalina. In the first film, Peach discusses her younger years with the newly-arrived Mario. During this scene, viewers get to see a flashback of a baby Peach arriving in the Mushroom Kingdom, where she is wearing an outfit adorned with stars and moons, which seemed to indicate that she, like Rosalina, came from a more 'cosmic' place.

Peach also seems to dismiss Mario's suggestion she may come from the same place as him - the human world - during this same scene in the film. Here, she tells him her earliest memory is that arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom and being welcomed by the Toads. At this time, she muses there is a "huge universe" out there, with "a lot of galaxies", which of course set many-a-Rosalina-based-family-theory alarm bells ringing.

There isn't much longer before we will know if Nintendo and Illumination are indeed going to make Rosalina and Peach's relationship official, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release next month, on 1st April. Along with heroes like Mario, Luigi, Peach and Rosalina, retro-enemy Wart will also be making their wicked return in the upcoming movie, alongside Birdo and the black-clad Ninjis.
