Street Photographer Shoots ‘Weird’ Photos on Dyson’s New CameraJet Toothbrush

A photographer has been wandering the streets with a new Dyson CameraJet toothbrush, attempting to take pictures with it.

The $499 Dyson CameraJet has caused a stir since it was released earlier this month as it follows the trend of everyday items getting cameras installed on them.

One creator, who goes by “all gear no skill” on Instagram, took the camera-equipped toothbrush for a street photo walk and put it through its paces.

“There’s the running joke of ‘dentists owning Leicas’ in the photo community, so when I saw Dyson dropping the toothbrush with a camera, I knew it just had to be used for street photos,” she tells PetaPixel. “It just makes sense.”

All gear no skill has previously colorized photos taken with a Leica M10 Monochrom and scanned thermal prints with a 150-megapixel Phase One. “Photography should be fun,” she adds.

The Dyson CameraJet has an endoscopic camera designed to capture images of teeth. All gear no skill calls the photos it takes in the real world “straight out weird.”

“The camera needs a lot of light, but also can’t handle too much of it,” she adds. “It’s made for macro photography with a lot of fisheye distortion, but when taken outside it looks like an IR [infrared] camera. Of course, the resolution is not great, and colours and white balance are all over the place.”

The photographer says she got “quite a few weird looks” while out taking photos with a toothbrush.

Dyson says the device does not store images or video on the toothbrush or upload them to the cloud. So, the footage can only be viewed live on the app.

“There’s no recording option in the app, so I just took screenshots of the screen on my phone,” she explains.

“The app works really well, connects easily, and there’s very little lag in the feed. It’s rather funny that a toothbrush app delivers a better experience than some camera manufacturer’s own apps…”

All gear no skill says the photos have generally been received “very positively” as people enjoyed the strange photos and compared them to early 2020s genAI results.

But not everyone enjoyed it. Reddit moderators, not known for their tolerance of tomfoolery, deleted her post shared to r/streetphoto because it broke the “street photography only” rule.

“I’ve reached out to the mods explaining that I was using a toothbrush to take photos on the streets,” she says.

“They reviewed the post and decided not to reinstate it because ‘It is not street photography.’ I am very hurt by their decision.”
