Idris Elba points a gun in The Dark Tower

Stephen King teasing more Mid-World stories bodes well for Mike Flanagan's The Dark Tower show. Flanagan has directed film adaptations of the King novels Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. He also directed an adaptation of the short story The Life of Chuck, set for a theatrical release in May 2025. Adapting King's work is set to continue with Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower series that is still in development. This is not the only major Dark Tower universe project currently in the works, though, with King teasing that he is writing a new Dark Tower book.

In October 2024, King shared on X (formerly Twitter), that he was back "in Mid-World...and the Territories." This tease made it unclear whether the developing story is more of a Dark Tower book, as per the Mid-World reference, or if the Territories mention means that the story will be the third installment in The Talisman series. A more recent post on Threads indicates that King is working on a third Talisman novel, but this is still a promising development for Flanagan's Dark Tower show.

Stephen King's Mid-World Tease Is Even More Exciting With A Dark Tower Show Coming

Mid-World Will Likely Return In Multiple Ways

If the third Talisman book referenced in King's Threads post is the same project he was referencing in October, the next Talisman book will not only focus on the Territories, but on The Dark Tower's primary setting of Mid-World as well. This is poised to be the most important connection yet between The Talisman and Dark Tower books. Learning more about Mid-World and its relation to the Territories makes the prospect of Flanagan's Dark Tower show even more compelling.

Stephen King's next book, Never Flinch, has been confirmed to release in 2025 and confirms his second biggest universe after The Dark Tower.

While he is set to adapt the story of Roland Deschain and other Dark Tower characters from the existing books, Flanagan's show could incorporate important details about Mid-World that have not been revealed yet, but that will play an important role in the Talisman book. Even if there is not this level of interconnectivity between the two projects, it is thrilling to know that Mid-World is seemingly being further developed by King while also being adapted for a streaming series. Mid-World is set to be essential to the future of King's books and to screen adaptations of his stories.

Those who read The Talisman and its sequel Black House will also provide more of a reason to visit or revisit Roland's story in The Dark Tower novels after reading the third Talisman book. The Dark Tower series features Stephen King's all-time best ending, but the universe is much larger than just the story of Roland and his ka-tet, creating opportunities such as the story in the third Talisman installment.
