Steam has a ton of free content on offer for PC gamers to take advantage of, either by way of its extensive free-to-play library, free limited-time offers that can run anywhere from a whole month to just 24 hours, or in the form of free demos that allow players to check out a small portion of the game to see if it's up their alley or not.
Further, Steam has an incredible lineup of fresh indie games, as it's one of the top platforms for small-time developers to get their titles out to a large audience of gamers. Free offers are a great incentive for Steam gamers and developers alike, and it's a win-win-win setup they've got going on that's hard to pass up. And there's one brand-new indie game with absolutely glowing reviews and a 96% positive user rating that you can play for free right now (via Steam).
Schrödinger's Call is a newly released narrative-based game with absolutely stunning artwork and a completely original and unique story and characters that has blown away gamers on Steam so far since its launch on May 27. This new visual novel from developer Acrobatic Chirimenjako tells a deeply heartfelt emotional story, where players begin following Mary as she "wakes up in a strange room, her memories gone."
Mary is then "guided by a mysterious cat named Hamlet [and] becomes the 'World’s Last Confidant,'" fielding calls through an ominous telephone from spirits on the other side. "As Mary notes down these lingering regrets, chapter by chapter, she walks alongside the voices on the other end—and perhaps, you begin to see what truly matters as well."
Schrödinger's Call is told in a series of chapters, with the first chapter being playable as a free demo to give gamers on Steam a chance to see what's in store. That demo is certain to pique your interest if you're a fan of beautifully designed, narrative-driven games as well as strong female lead characters.
As dmkd_s puts it in their Steam review, "All I could say is... It's beautiful. From the moment I tried the demo (chapter 1), I fell in love with the soundtracks, the artstyle, and the narrative. And I was right, through the next chapter till the end, I really enjoyed this game. The story is just beautiful, and carefully written."
Similarly, Async calls this "their game of the year," saying, "It's hard to express just how incredible this game really is. I played the demo and was instantly hooked." Overall, Schrödinger's Call is a must-play indie visual novel that fans of the genre cannot skip, and is well worth trying the demo for free on Steam now.
