James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

Steam has become a great place to go for all sorts of free games, whether it's time-limited offers that allow you to play games for a certain period, or behemoths like Counter-Strike 2, which have always been free at the point of download.

Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for Deponia, a 2012 point and click adventure from Daedalic Entertainment, who have since become more well known as a publisher.

Though point-and-click used to be a lot more popular on PC than they are today, usually due to limitations in hardware and what games they were able to run at home, there are still excellent examples with a much more contemporary feel.

Deponia is definitely one of those, combining a memorable art style that might remind you of games like 60 Seconds, with a compelling and very funny love story set against the backdrop of a world that has degenerated into a vast garbage dump.

The game's protagonist is Rufus, a member of the world's lowest social class, who is doomed to live his life amongst the rubbish, without much hope of ever elevating himself out of that. At the same time, the rich live in a floating city above the clouds where things are considerably nicer, and the narrative essentially sees him launch a hair-brained scheme to get, and stay, up there.

Even if you haven't played a point-and-click adventure before, Deponia is one that's well worth your consideration. The game features a full hand-drawn art style, with no assistance from nefarious AI, with inspiration taken from greats like Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, and Matt Groening.

You'll be working through the story for the most part, engaging in hours of dialogue and making choices that affect how everything plays out. It's also filled to the brim with tricky puzzles to get your head round, with those serving as the main gameplay challenge along the way.

As mentioned earlier, the game is 100% free to download and keep right now, until March 16, with many other games under the Daedalic Banner heavily discounted on Steam, including additional expansions to the base story in Deponia.
