Steam has a treasure trove of excellent hidden gems in its extensive library of games, and while there are certainly plenty of free games available on the platform, not all of them are top-tier experiences. So it's pretty rare to find a free game that is also highly rated among users, and even rarer to find a high-quality horror experience that faithfully adapts the iconic H.P. Lovecraft's work.
H.P. Lovecraft's body of literature is absolutely sprawling, and includes truly haunting, weird, and terrifying stories that have stood the test of time, arguably becoming even more popular in the modern era as people's appetite for horror has only grown.
If you're looking for a truly unique video game that doesn't break the bank and immerses players in Lovecraft's terrifying, cosmic Cthulhu mythos, this 2021 hidden gem has 95% positive user ratings and is available to play entirely for free (via Steam).
Dagon is an incredible horror game from 2021 that not enough people talk about given it's one of the best adaptations of Lovecraft's work that you're likely to find. It's a story-driven visual novel with extremely immersive gameplay that is the closest thing to actually stepping into one of Lovecraft's haunting and creepy stories.
Dagon is a 3D narrative experience in madness based on the cult short story of the same title by the master of cosmic horror and weird fiction, H. P. Lovecraft himself. It’s an interactive portal into the world of the controversial genius and his highly acclaimed Cthulhu Mythos, open to both newcomers and long-time devotees.
Dagon reimagines the iconic short story in a stunning 3D game that's available for both VR and standard gameplay experiences, and it puts players in "the shoes of a former ship officer and morphine fiend, [diving] into the Stygian Abyss of a drug-addled mind." Players will "uncover the unspeakable, long-drowned horrors on a distant eldritch island and wallow in Lovecraftian dread," and it's just one of a series of Lovecraft-based releases from indie developers at Bit Golem.
The game may be short and sweet, but it's well worth playing considering it won't cost you a dime, and it's the perfect game to get you ready for Bit Golem's upcoming 2026 release of Dr. Emmerson's Nocturnes, a similarly-styled and highly anticipated release that adapts iconic horror literature into 3D visual novels.
While Bit Golem's approach to video games won't be for everyone, they come highly recommended among literature fiends and horror fanatics alike, and with a 95% user rating and thousands of positive reviews, Dagon is well worth checking out on Steam for free.
