There are tons of excellent free games available to download on Steam right now, with the platform adding new titles on a daily basis. There's a brand-new RPG you can try out for free now, and it's got Stardew Valley meets Skyrim vibes that fans of either game will want to check out.

Runic Winds is a newly added RPG on Steam that fans of the genre can try out free right now via the game's first-chapter demo. It's a pixel-art style Stardew-like that features top-down gameplay, where players master "rune magic through deliberate combat, exploration, and atmospheric dungeon crawling."

Runic Winds Is Free To Try Right Now

Try It Out On Steam

Runic Winds is one of several RPGs made available on Steam for free this month already, but it's one that is well worth a try. The game features a "handcrafted world shaped by ancient runes, forgotten history, and quiet mystery," and players can check out the full opening chapter in the free demo on Steam.

The demo also gives players a sense of the game's "gesture-based spellcasting and puzzle-solving" mechanics, one full dungeon and a boss encounter, plus a taste of the various "exploration and secrets to be found."

Runic Winds is a passion project from indie solo developer GeccoBot, and while the demo is available now, the full version still does not have an estimated release date. For project updates and to learn more information as it becomes available, be sure to wishlist the game ASAP.

It's Like Stardew Valley Crossed With Skyrim

The Demo Will Give You A Feel For What's Ahead

Runic Winds features an expansive 2D open world with exciting fantasy-driven gameplay in "interconnected regions and atmospheric dungeons," with puzzle-solving gameplay and "deliberate, skill-based combat that rewards patience and precision." It's the perfect game to try out if you're a fan of the massive fantasy world and mythos in Skyrim and/or games with a similar visual style as Stardew Valley.

The game promises to pull players into its original and mystical world, putting players in the shoes of Maria as she "awakens with no memory of her past." Further details in terms of the game's narrative and the scope of the story itself have not yet been released, though there are sure to be more updates soon.

You'll be tasked with "slowly [piecing] together the truth of the world and its runes," and the Steam demo will give players a sense of the larger possibilities for the full release. There's so much potential for this unique world to be built out more, and by the sound of things, GeccoBot is going full throttle.
