The beloved and acclaimed Stardew Valley turns 10 years old on February 26, and while we're eagerly anticipating new official content with the 1.7 update, an extensive fan-made expansion of Ginger Island may be exactly what you need to mark the occasion. Excursions to Ginger Island were added in version 1.5, giving players a brand-new location to explore, items to find, and puzzles to solve, but it's understandably limited in scope.
The Ginger Island Extra Locations mod from mistyspring (via Nexus Mods) seeks to remedy that, however, and it has just recently seen a Redux release that is compatible with Stardew Valley 1.6. It's practically a complete overhaul of Ginger Island, adding new locations, tools, animals and fish (and the produce that comes with them), recipes, and so much more. Ginger Island Extra Locations - Redux even puts a second Community Center on the island, giving you a new set of goals to work toward.
Stardew Valley: Ginger Island Extra Locations Is By And For Fans
Stardew Valley mods are numerous, and there are plenty that take the game beyond Pelican Town, Ginger Island Extra Locations among them. The modding scene has produced some incredible work in the decade that Stardew has been out, and some of the more robust fan creations are exactly what longtime players are looking for. Die-hard fans tend to create mods for what they wish to see in the game, and those interests often align with their fellow players.
Ginger Island Extra Locations expands on what is already an interesting location. The island feels exotic and mysterious, and slowly opens up as you satiate the local parrot population's hunger for
Gold Walnuts. With mistyspring's mod, it's a more expansive end-game zone, complete with a new mine (and new ore to go with it), a new shop, and a new monster to fight. An extra bonus for longtime players on PC is that Ginger Island Extra Locations' Redux version is compatible with a number of other popular Stardew Valley mods.
Stardew Valley's 10th Anniversary Is Coming Up
At the time of writing, we're on the eve of Stardew Valley's 10th anniversary. ConcernedApe's genre-dominating game first released for PC on February 26, 2016. A decade later, we're still getting new content for free, and waiting for Haunted Chocolatier, ConcernedApe's second game. All things considered, Stardew Valley is one of the most successful video games of all time, with its illustrious reputation enshrined years ago.
Mods like mistyspring's are just one way to see how transcendent the game is. New updates for Stardew keep coming, and mod creators continue to update their companion works to be compatible. It's starting to seem like Stardew Valley will never be "finished," and we wouldn't have it any other way. We're about to see what the game's second decade has in store.
