Despite all that's been shown, it's presumed that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie still has a lot of surprises it's holding back, and that could include some established video game characters. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie already has a stacked cast of characters, but as it keeps growing, it's worth wondering who else may still be lurking in the story.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may not be bringing back Donkey Kong and company, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in star power; as it'll be offering some big-screen appearances for a handful of fan favorites from the Super Mario franchise - Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and even Birdo.
What's more, the film is set to throw into the equation a handful of largely forgotten or abandoned Mario characters. Wart, the villain of Super Mario Bros. 2 will finally make a return to the franchise via The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where he'll be joined by some of his underlings from the game.
Given all the characters the movie is managing to find room for, there's a long list of options when it comes to who might be involved that the film has yet to show off in the marketing. Among the names that come up the most in theories are Wario, Fox McCloud, and Princess Daisy. But while appearances from them are theoretically possible, they're not the most likely candidates for hidden characters.
Fryguy
Although he's unlikely to be a significant addition, Fryguy is one of the most sensible choices for a cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, based simply on the direction the film is heading in. The trailers have proven that the scenes set in the casino where Princess Peach and Toad meet Wart are based heavily on Super Mario Bros. 2.
That's made evident not only by the inclusion of the game's main antagonist, but also the presence of his minions (the Ninjis and the Sniffits) and three of the bosses at his command, which are Birdo, Mouser, and Clawgrip. With all these on hand, it seems reasonable that the other two bosses in the game, one of which is Fryguy, will be on hand too.
In Super Mario Bros. 2, Fryguy is introduced as a sentient flame. Because he's made of fire, Mario and the other playable character naturally can't hurt him with physical contact, so jumping on him doesn't cause any injury. Instead, they have to rely on throwing Mushroom Blocks to defeat him.
It's not hard to imagine a similar concept being applied to Fryguy in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with the character appearing as one of the several combatants in the big casino fight teased by the marketing. The film could briefly show Princess Peach and Toad relying on nearby projectiles to dispose of the fiery villain.
Tryclyde
The other missing Super Mario Bros. 2 boss is Tryclyde. In the game, Mario and the others have to bypass snakes in jars called Cobrats. When the player advances to the end of World 2, they have to do battle with Tryclyde, who is depicted as a giant, three-headed Cobrat who spits fireballs. Like the situation with Fryguy, Tryclyde has to be injured from afar, and his fireballs must be avoided.
Tryclyde is unique to most Super Mario minions and bosses given the strong, fantasy genre vibes given off by his design. Using that, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has an opportunity to introduce a truly fearsome creature as a fun surprise to anyone that's not played Super Mario Bros. 2 and therefore won't be expecting such an imposing and menacing character to appear.
Dino Piranha
Why its obvious tributes to Super Mario Bros. 2 and other classic Mario games will be welcome, it's Super Mario Galaxy and possibly its sequel that are meant to be the focus here, so some of its original characters - and bosses - should certainly be expected to appear in some capacity. The Megaleg has been confirmed, and others - like Dino Piranha - could be on hand as well.
A dinosaur-like take on Petey Piranha the extremely powerful Pirahna Plant variant serves as the first boss of Super Mario Galaxy. His primary weapon, and also his weakness, is his tail club. As the first boss Mario has to defeat, Dino Pirahna is indeed a character with significance to the franchise, which is why he'd be a worthy choice for a cameo or an opponent for Mario.
Interestingly, the film has already teased an appearance from Dino Piranha. In the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Dino Piranha's desgn can be spotted on the wall above the doorway of Wart's casino. This indicates that Dino Piranha may be one of the villains Princess Peach and Toad will encounter there.
Guppy
During Mario's adventure in Super Mario Galaxy's water levels, Sea Slide Galaxy and Deep Dark Galaxy, he meets an orca named Guppy. On both occasions, Guppy has claimed the ocean as his own, forcing Mario to drive him away by challenging - and beating him - in a racing event.
With the film expected to introduce various galaxies from the series for the main characters to visit, there's a possibility that one of the aquatic planets will be among them. If so, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may offer a cameo from Guppy, whose smug personality lends him the potential to be a fun addition to the story.
Mario and Luigi venturing into a place where a Guppy appearance would feel appropriate makes a lot of sense for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, especially in light of the fact that the film will include Frog Luigi, a form used in aquatic Super Mario levels.
Professor E. Gadd
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see Bowser Jr. brandish a device that can be identified as the Magic Paintbrush, the seam weapon he used in his video debut in Super Mario Sunshine. In the 2002 classic, it was revealed that the Magic Paintbrush was created by Professor E. Gadd, the brilliant scientist and inventor who aided Luigi in his ghost-hunting adventures in the Luigi's Mansion series.
The trailers have made it abundantly clear that the Magic Paintbrush will be an important plot device in the film, in that it triggers new forms for Bowser Jr. and allows him to create constructs. WIth that in mind, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may be setting up a cameo for its creator, who may be able to help Mario and Luigi find a way to counter the Magic Paintbrush's power.
Tatanga
Wart's upcoming big-screen debut in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie gives hope to the prospect of a cameo from Tatanga. Much like Wart himself, Tatanga is a deep-cut Super Mario villain who has been missing from the franchise for more than three decades. First appearing in Super Mario Land, Tatanga is a purple-skinned alien invader who captured Princess Daisy and conqueored her kingdom, Sarasaland.
Tatanga, who flies around in a UFO, serves as the final boss of Super Mario Land, and an early boss that Mario has to defeat in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, where Wario is the main villain. Tatanga never returned again, but his absence from the franchise could soon end, due largely to the movie franchise's willingness to include obscure Easter eggs, not to mention the galactic setting.
As the Super Mario franchise's first villain to hail from outerspace, Tatanga would fit perfectly into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, possibly as a surprise enemy for Mario to encounter while he's chasing after Bowser Jr.
