Despite exploring different eras of the timeline and expanding his story in new ways, Lucasfilm has remained remarkably consistent with Vader's iconic appearance. His infamous black helmet, flowing cape, armored chest panel, and life-support suit have only been subtly altered in barely noticeable ways over the decades, and as such, has become one of cinema's most famous character designs.
However, Star Wars is officially shaking things up with an official new Darth Vader redesign that fans will be able to check out later this year thanks to a new Sideshow release (via YouTube).
Darth Vader is getting an official new redesign thanks to the Mythos line of premium collectible statues from Sideshow Collectibles. The new Darth Vader design comes by way of a high-end, highly detailed sculpture "recreating both the intricate hardware of the character’s cybernetic life support systems and the dynamic, flowing movement of his windswept robes and cape."
It's currently available for pre-order with multiple editions available, including a 24-inch Exclusive and Collector's Edition and a quarter-scale Premium Format Exclusive and Collector's Edition, with each level featuring unique add-ons such as the Premium Format's "light-up aspects in the belt box, chest box, lightsaber, and base, allowing the fire to burn bright as Vader descends to crush his enemies."
The statue was designed and sculpted by the Kucharek Brothers with paint by artist Bernardo Esquivel, as well as the Sideshow Design and Development Team, with the premium format of the Collector's Edition available for pre-order now at $1,085 USD. You can join the waitlist of the other editions, which are sure to be restocked at some point in the future.
According to the official Sideshow product description, the Darth Vader statue is an officially licensed Star Wars product meant to recapture specific backstory elements of Vader's arc:
Detailed tatters and tears in his black uniform reveal the burns he sustained during his most fateful duel as well as the mechanical limbs he was gifted with by his new master, Darth Sidious. Darth Vader’s robes also feature striking paint applications that reflect the glow of the flames and the red lightsaber in the figure, adding depth and dimension to the scene.
It isn't every day that we see such a unique take on Vader's costume design, though it's to be expected from the Mythos line of figures from Sideshow, which "showcases fine art collectibles that allow the collector to imagine what could have been, but maybe never was." With this run limited to just 800 units, hardcore Star Wars collectors will not want to sleep on this truly unique Darth Vader release.
