Ahoy Comics’ new Dragonproof is perfect for fans of Gargoyles and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Two of the most popular franchises of the 1990s, Buffy and Gargoyles, are still as popular with fans in 2026 as they were in their heyday. Now, Dragonproof captures that same vibe, and ScreenRant is pleased to bring readers a first look at this graphic novel launching on Kickstarter.

The 1990s saw a surge in genre entertainment. Thanks to the success of television shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5 and The X-Files, speculative fiction was the order of the day. Into this came Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A reworking of the 1992 film of the same name, the show was an immediate hit for the still-new WB Network. Gargoyles, an animated series produced by Disney, and airing weekday afternoons in the mid-1990s, was also a resounding success, with new comics based on the franchise still being produced.

Both of these properties were innovative, and helped launch or boost a number of careers. Buffy and Gargoyles appealed to a generation of fans, and still find new ones today. Now, Ahoy Comics is bringing Gargoyles and Buffy the Vampire Slayer lovers their next great obsession with Dragonproof.

Ahoy Comics Has Announced Eric Palicki and Giulia Lalli's Dragonproof

Today, Ahoy Comics launched a Kickstarter campaign for Dragonproof, a new, 80-page graphic novel, written by Eric Palicki and drawn by Giulia Lalli. Ahoy, who will release Dragonproof as part of its Select line, provided ScreenRant with a synopsis, which reads as follows:

Dragonproof is the brainchild of acclaimed writer Eric Palicki. Palicki, who has made a name for himself in the indie comic scene with works such as Black’s Myth and Atlantis Wasn’t Built for Tourists, had this to say about Dragonproof:

Like so much of my other work, DRAGONPROOF is, at its heart, about outsiders finding their people and their purpose.

Palicki will be joined on Dragonproof by artist Guilia Lalli, whose previous credits include Eight Limbs, was excited to work on the project, stating:

When Eric proposed this project to me I was very excited and comfortable, since fantasy has been my ‘war horse’ for many years and I always loved drawing dragons...But this time I was more intrigued by the story because it’s actually very different and unique than many other fantasy-based stories.

Finally, Ahoy Senior Editor Sarah Litt shared Palicki and Lalli’s enthusiasm for Dragonproof:

Dragonproof Subverts the Dragon Myth

Franchises like Buffy and Gargoyles appealed to outsiders and misfits, those were out of step with their peers, and Dragonproof is also grounded firmly in this tradition. Ashleigh Cole, Dragonproof’s protagonist, begins a metamorphosis after encountering one of the creatures. Dragons are a staple of folklore and mythology, but how they are depicted wildly varies. Dragonproof is taking a compassionate approach to these creatures, not unlike how Gargoyles showed the heroic side of demonic-looking entities. Ashleigh’s crusade to save the dragons finds parallels in Buffy’s quest as well.

Dragonproof is bringing together the various strands that run through Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gargoyles in what is sure to be another triumph for Palicki, Lalli and Ahoy Comics. By having the military co-opt dragons, and turn them into weapons of mass destruction, the creative team is putting a highly creative spin on these creatures. Its mix of heart and fantasy is sure to make Dragonproof one of the year’s best comics.
