Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is easily one of the most beloved Star Wars RPGs out there, which is finally getting an official remake and even a new sequel on the horizon. Unfortunately, despite a remake being announced years ago, we're still years away from getting to play anything definitive from either project within the franchise.

While you could always replay the original two KOTOR games and relive the experience, there is one official follow-up to Revan's storyline that most players have never even heard of, taking place between the events of the original KOTOR and the acclaimed Star Wars The Old Republic MMO.

Released all the way back in 2011 and written by senior KOTOR writer Drew Karpyshyn, The Old Republic: Revan is an official sequel set 2 years after the events of the original game. Helping to fill in the gap of how Revan ended up in SWTOR after the ending of KOTOR, the Revan novel explores the titular character going on one last adventure to save the galaxy from an encroaching threat.

Being the first of 4 books from The Old Republic episodic novels that further explore the beloved Star Wars era and some of its most popular characters, Revan's storyline is self-contained to the novel itself. Given how eager fans have been over canceled fan projects, upcoming remakes, and the release of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, The Old Republic: Revan is a great alternative for those who don't want to wait for more KOTOR content.

The Old Republic: Revan is also available as an audiobook form, which enhances the experience even further through the use of XXX.

On top of each entry in the episode series being highly rated novels in their own right, they also provide some much-needed context while letting us see some of the coolest characters in the franchise in action. Even with this, however, the Revan novel rarely gets talked about when discussion of KOTOR comes up.

The Old Republic Era Of Star Wars Is Criminally Underrated

Unfortunately, despite being incredibly well written on its own, the Revan novel has faced criticism for how it treats several fan-favorite characters, while also relatively ignoring the events of KOTOR II.

Putting aside the struggles of adding a canon conclusion to the relatively open-ended CRPG series, many fans have complained that The Old Republic: Revan takes away much of the mysticism of its protagonists, and felt frustrated that it serves only to explain how certain characters ended up where they did in SWTOR.

Even if the ending does fall quite a bit flat, and feels like it was begging for an official follow-up or third game to explore that wasn't just within the confines of the SWTOR MMO, the overall experience is still incredibly worthwhile. Considering how long we'll have to wait for Fate of the Old Republic, the Old Republic: Revan novel is one that I can definitely recommend at least trying to any fan of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
