Lucasfilm reportedly has its sights set on a director for Star Wars: Episode X.
In 2019, Star Wars’ Skywalker Saga concluded with The Rise of Skywalker, bringing an end to the main film series that launched with A New Hope in 1977. The dry spell of Star Wars movies ended back in May with The Mandalorian & Grogu’s arrival, and Star Wars: Starfighter follows in 2027. As for what awaits a galaxy far, far away on the big screen after that, word has come in that Lucasfilm has lined up a familiar face to helm Episode X.

According to Knight Edge Media, Lucasfilm is “circling” Jon Watts to direct the first installment of the new Star Wars film trilogy that Simon Kinberg is writing. Watts previously signed a first-look deal with Disney in 2024 to produce live-action movies, and before that, he directed the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first three Spider-Man movies, which were co-produced by the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Per this new report, while Watts is only being looked at for Episode X right now, it’s possible he might be considered for the trilogy’s other two installments at a later date.
The filmmaker already has experience in this space opera franchise, as he co-created the Disney+ show Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with Christopher Ford, as well as directed the series premiere and series finale. Part of that experience entailed working with executive producer Dave Filoni, who is now the president and chief creative officer of Lucasfilm. As such, it would make sense why Watts is allegedly in the running for Episode X, one of the many upcoming Star Wars movies in development.
In spite of the Skywalker Saga’s conclusion, Episode X is rumored to directly follow up on the events of the Sequel Trilogy. Previously, it was announced that Daisy Ridley would reprise Rey in the untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed film chronicling the character establishing a new Jedi Order 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Although that project is officially still in active development, the report about Watts’ potential involvement in Episode X claims that it’s been shelved.
While Star Wars: Starfighter is confirmed to be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, it will be a standalone story following new characters. Assuming Episode X is indeed building off of the 2019 Star Wars movie, Ridley will reportedly only reprise Rey in a minor role, and it’s unclear if John Boyega and Oscar Isaac will return as Finn and Poe Dameron, respectively. Watts’ last directorial effort, Wolfs, was released on Apple TV in 2024. He also produced 2025’s Final Destination: Bloodlines and this year’s Never Change.
ScreenRant has reached out to Disney and Lucasfilm for comment about the Star Wars: Episode X report. Starfighter will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027, and the TV side of the Star Wars franchise will pick back up on Disney+ when Ahsoka season 2 premieres on January 20 of the same year.
