James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The original duology of Star Wars: Battlefront games really are two of the best examples of the genre that players had seen up to that point, and arguably even in the modern era. That made the third release in the series about as much of an inevitability as it's possible to have in the world of video games.
As all of you who were around at the time will know, Battlefront 3 was eventually canned before we ever got to play it, with it still serving as one of the most famous cancellations of all time. Though Free Radical Design's effort never saw the light of day, it was frustratingly close to release when it was cancelled by LucasArts in 2008.
Happily, that late decision did have one major knock-on effect, and it finally means that we can play at least some of what the developer was intending.
Over on ModDB, you should be able to find the download page for Star Wars Battlefront 3 Legacy, a mod for Battlefront 2 that overhauls the game into something similar to what the real thing was meant to be like.
It's a hugely ambitious project that essentially functions as a total overhaul, with the unbelievably committed developers putting in over nine years of work to make it a reality. It even includes many of the assets made by Free Radical themselves, restoring them into the game so they can finally be put to good use by players.
In sharing exactly what the mod is all about, the developer shared the following insights into their labor of love:
"Star Wars Battlefront III Legacy is a large-scale conversion mod created for Battlefront II using as many recovered assets that are available from the cancelled game Star Wars Battlefront 3 by Free Radical; including both eras (Clone Wars and GCW), a brand-new HUD+Interface and a few converted maps such as Coruscant, Cato Neimoidia, Bespin and Dantooine.
"It will give you a new HUD with new elements and functions as well as an unknown number [yet] of converted maps. The map features modes like Assault, 1&2 Flag, Team DM, Hero Assault, Space Assault and many more. Also a campaign for both eras are planned. As well as new modes the map features Space to Ground combat. You can battle on ground or get into a fighter and travel up to space and fight against you enemy, above the planet surface, there."
It's a really cool project that should be given plenty of credit, if only for the preservation work it does for an unreleased game.
As with all mods on the website, it's an entirely free download, so there really isn't a risk to checking it out for yourself. With the Battlefront franchise seemingly a little dead in the water for the time being as well, it's probably also some of the most fun you can have in 2026 with the series.
