Star Wars' 4-Season Series Reinvented The Lightsaber

3 weeks ago 20

Star Wars' four-season series completely reinvented the lightsaber. Lightsabers have been part of Star Wars' iconography since 1977, ever since Luke Skywalker first ignited his father's blue blade in Obi-Wan Kenobi's homestead on Tatooine. They are the legendary weapons of the Jedi and the Sith, used in the galaxy's most pivotal duels, each hilt and blade unique to its maker.

During his training in Star Wars Rebels season 1, Ezra built the most unique Jedi lightsaber the franchise had ever seen. Rather than designing a traditional, cylindrical hilt, Ezra instead built a dual-purpose weapon. Not only did it house the Jedi's adjustable blue plasma blade, but it also featured a blaster function (set to stun), one that helped Ezra defend himself before he learned to block blaster bolts with his saber. The boxy, utilitarian design was so unlike the usual curved, smooth lines of the Jedi's weaponry. Still, it suited Ezra perfectly during the early days of his life as a wanted Jedi-in-training.

Why Ezra's Unique Lightsaber Design Suited His Character

While each lightsaber is an extension of a Jedi or Sith character, Ezra's rare lightsaber design was a perfect match for his personality. Unlike most of the franchise's other Padawans (with the exception, of course, of Luke), Ezra didn't train with a lightsaber from an early age. He had to learn while on the run. Kanan was equally inexperienced as a teacher, having been forced into hiding while still a teenager after the Jedi Order's destruction. It took time for them to find a groove as master and apprentice.

As such, Ezra's desire to find another way to defend himself wasn't surprising, especially when facing an onslaught of stormtroopers and Jedi-hunting Inquisitors. The blaster function was a nod to his roots, an acknowledgment of his rough life on Lothal before he met the Ghost crew and discovered his affinity with the Force. It was also a great way to represent Ezra's mechanical know-how and combat versatility. Above all, though, Ezra wasn't yet fully comfortable as a Jedi, and his lightsaber reflected that. He still had a lot of learning to do.

In the end, Ezra's first lightsaber was destroyed during a multi-way duel with none other than Darth Vader. Between Star Wars Rebels seasons 2 and 3, Ezra designed a second lightsaber, a green-bladed sword with a more recognizable and sleek, rounded hilt. While it was a shame that Ezra's original lightsaber was destroyed, his new one symbolized his growing strength as a Jedi, as he claimed his power and future while overcoming the lure of the dark side.

Was Ezra Bridger's Lightsaber Against The Jedi Way?

If Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith-era Obi-Wan Kenobi is to be believed, blasters are "so uncivilized." The Jedi, of course, are meant to be peacekeepers, defenders of light and life. The lightsaber is representative of their ethos; they aren't weapons of mass destruction, capable of harming dozens of people in seconds. They invite close, individual combat and offer protection against other, more volatile weapons. Non-red lightsabers are symbols of hope, not oppression.

Ezra built a third, blue-bladed lightsaber in Ahsoka season 1; the design honored his Master. It included a replica of the emitter used in Kanan's old lightsaber.

Despite the blaster function, Ezra's first lightsaber was the perfect weapon for his journey as a Jedi. If anything, because the blaster only shot stun bolts, it was even more of a defensive weapon than most other lightsabers. The blaster helped Ezra protect himself and those around him, and it never killed anyone. It was certainly never any more powerful than the plasma blade itself. As the Sith (and the Jedi) proved time and again, lightsabers are among the deadliest weapons in the galaxy, depending on how they're used.

The Jedi Order no longer existed during Star Wars Rebels. The Jedi Masters of old may never have built a lightsaber like Ezra's, but most never had to survive a galaxy as dangerous and violent as the one ruled by the Empire, either. Ezra's unique lightsaber helped him blend in, and he eventually became one of the most impactful Jedi and Rebel fighters, freeing Lothal and defeating Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn in the process. During a time when the galaxy needed the Jedi most, that was all anyone could really ask for.
