Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 9 - "300th Night"
Nus Braka's (Paul Giamatti) super villain weapon in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 cleverly combines a classic Star Trek in-joke and brings back a deadly invention from Star Trek: Voyager. Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kirsten Beyer from a story by Beyer and Kenneth Lin, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 reveals Nus Braka's diabolical scheme to bring the United Federation of Planets to its knees.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, "300th Night," ends with Nus Braka and the Venari Ral encasing all of Federation space with Omega-47 mines, making it impossible to enter or leave. Omega-47 was one of the top-secret weapons Nustopher stole from Starbase J19-Alpha in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, "Come, Let's Away."
If Nus Braka detonates his mines, Omega-47 would shred space and subspace. With mines blanketing the entire Federation and all the worlds within, Omega-47 would make warp travel impossible for millions of years. It would be the second coming of The Burn, but infinitely worse.
Meanwhile, "Omega-47" is a mashup of a pair of callbacks from Star Trek: The Next Generation's 24th century era.
Nus Braka's Super Villain Weapon Is Based On Star Trek's 47 In-Joke
Amusingly, "Omega-47" in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy brings together the number 47 and the Omega particle from Star Trek: Voyager. 47 has been a running joke since Star Trek: The Next Generation. 47 has popped up throughout Star Trek and has been a fan-favorite trope for over 35 years.
In the 1990s, writer Joseph Menosky began inserting 47 into Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4 scripts. 47 caught on, and other writers ran with it in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, which Menosky also wrote for, and Star Trek: Enterprise.
47 originated from Joseph Menosky's alma mater, Pomona College, which hosted The 47 Society, which claims mathematical proof that all numbers are equal to 47. The Society believes the number 47 occurs with greater frequency in nature than other numbers.
Omega-47 becoming a super weapon Nus Braka uses against the Federation may be the ultimate manifestation of 47.
Although the 47 joke waned in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as writer Ronald D. Moore said they "tired" of the gag, 47 continued in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies and in Star Trek on Paramount+'s series.
Omega-47 becoming a super weapon that Nus Braka uses against the Federation may be the ultimate manifestation of 47.
Starfleet Academy's Omega-47 Is A Star Trek: Voyager Callback
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's Omega-47 brings back a terrifying substance from Star Trek: Voyager. In Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episode 21, "The Omega Directive," the Omega molecule was introduced as the most powerful substance in the universe. The Borg categorized Omega as Particle 010.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy gave The Doctor an evolution he's waited 800 years for after his pivotal experiences on Star Trek: Voyager.
One Omega molecule has the power of a warp core and could destroy space and subspace, making warp travel impossible. Starfleet utilizes an Omega Team to neutralize Omega if it's discovered or synthesized.
When a civilization in the Delta Quadrant synthesized 200 million Omega particles in 2374, Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the USS Voyager's crew were successfully able to destroy Omega.
800 years later, in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, Omega molecules were stored by the Federation in Starbase J19-Alpha. Somehow, Nus Braka learned this and stole the Omega to use against the Federation, with his ultimate goal to plunge the galactic alliance into a never-ending dark age without warp travel or the ability to connect with each other.
Armed with Omega-47 going into Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale, you might say, Nus Braka has the Federation's number.
